A century of spectacle has trained us to expect something beneath the feathers.

In Fan Girl, Nina Mae Fowler (@ninamaefowler) draws nine actresses rooted in the Midwest and Texas, from Judy Garland to Dorothy Dandridge, each caught in the moment the façade cracks: a dancer off balance, a figure mid-falter. Ostrich feathers, long bound up with showgirls and Hollywood glamour, conceal bodies and reveal gestures, shifting between seduction, protection, disguise and threat. The fans installed alongside the works stand in for us, stirring the feathers in a restless attempt to see what lies underneath. As they lift, there is nothing left to reveal.

What remains is the distance between the woman, the performer and the public image.

Live from Untitled Art, Houston (@untitledartfairs), Millie Jason Foster (@milliejasonfoster), Founding Director of GJG, introduces ‘Fan Girl’, a solo presentation of new work by Nina Mae Fowler (@ninamaefowler).

Made for the fair, ‘Fan Girl’ brings together nine drawings of actresses whose lives and careers took root in the Midwest and Texas, among them Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, Kim Novak and Dorothy Dandridge. Drawn from film stills, publicity shots and candid photographs, each figure is caught mid-falter, somewhere between the private woman and the performed self. Fowler dresses each drawing in ostrich feathers, the material of showgirls and Hollywood glamour, which draw the gaze and obstruct it in equal measure, with fans blowing the feathers to reveal what is behind.

Retreat Day 05.06.2026 Bracon Hall @braconhall

We started our day with a fiery ginger shot, followed by a strengthening Pilates session.

We then walked to the lake for swim, sauna and paddle boarding.

A nutritious lunch was served in the cosy cabin overlooking the lake, followed by tea/coffee and dessert on the decking enjoying the sunshine.

After lunch we were guided through a drawing session with @ninamaefowler which left us all inspired.

We ended our day with a relaxing and grounding Salt Bath with @jess.trent.co

It was a day to connect, rest, move and nourish our bodies and minds.
