The most special first day on Mo’orea. Naturally, I chose the week with the worst weather. Luckily, the whales don’t care one bit, and I was fortunate enough to spend about an hour with this calf and mama. Mom kept diving down per usual, but baby swung by a few times and checked everyone out. These are the things that will never get old to me. 🙌🏽

One of the best moments of this season for me. Rough-toothed dolphins escorting humpback whales, with incredible visibility. 🐋🐬

Being able to share these experiences with people who love and care about the ocean as much as I do is truly special. I feel incredibly fortunate to have friends who are always willing to jump into these spontaneous expeditions with me.

Somehow, everything always aligns, and we end up creating some of the best memories of our lives together. 🥹🙌🏽

Still can’t believe we got to swim with these gentle giants🥹🐋

I don’t think it‘s possible to understand what it feels like until you’ve been in the water with a humpback whale. The moment these enormous, peaceful animals come towards you, everything else just disappears. No thoughts, no noise — just you, the ocean and this incredible creature right in front of you.

We were so lucky to see mothers with their calves underwater on different days. Every year, humpback whales make the long journey from Antarctica to the warmer waters of French Polynesia to mate, give birth and raise their young. Moorea is one of the places they return to, with the main season running from August to October.

We came to Moorea especially for this adventure, because whale encounters are strictly regulated and respectfully carried out here. Only authorised operators and trained guides can take a small group of people out for close encounters, with clear rules around how the whales are approached.

Also, this experience isn’t for everyone. Due to the strict boat distance regulations, you’re swimming hundreds of meters in the open ocean, above deep water — sometimes thousands of metres deep — and depending on the day, you can be exposed to strong swell, waves and changing ocean conditions. You’re also in their world, which means you can encounter all kinds of marine life along the way🦈🪼🐬

Humpback whales are among the most graceful of all whales. With their long pectoral fins and playful mind, they look like underwater ballerinas.

Happy World Whale Day!

This photo is from my very first encounter with a humpback whale in Mo’orea, French Polynesia, in September 2023.
It was also my first day using a full-frame camera — and my first time ever putting my camera underwater.

When I stepped onto the boat, I still couldn’t believe a whale would actually appear in front of me. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that first encounter, and I hope it becomes just as unforgettable for everyone experiencing their first whale swim in 2026:)🐋🫶🏻
