Hello future diplomats and global leaders! We are honored and so excited to have the Consul General Lucia Sava of Romania join us on February 23rd. We will be hosting a discussion with her on a range of topics from international diplomacy, Romanian foreign policy goals, shifts in NATO and European military spending, and her prior career as an advisor to the Minster of Romania. As usual, Q&A will happen after the main discussion.

Hope to see you there!

Diplomacy Society was honored to begin our first quarter at UC Santa Barbara and create a space for an internationally and diplomatically minded UCSB community! Thank you to our incredible officer board, Sadie Parker, Layla Cromwell, Nina Rossi, Sasha Allen, Belle Hughs, and Letícia Almeida.

Throughout the quarter, we had three speakers visit UC Santa Barbara and discussed a wide range of topics in our weekly workshops. We want to thank Professor Julia C Morse for joining Diplomacy Society as our first guest speaker and giving incredible insights on joining the civil service and diplomacy at the United Nations, sharing her experience on the U.S. Mission to the U.N. and as an advisor to the Oxford Martin AI Governance Initiative.

Secondly, we were honored to have former U.S. Department of Commerce Foreign Service Officer Daniel Crocker speak on his impressive career and experience. The engaging conversation that ranged from working for the federal bureaucracy, the impact of tariffs to the world order, the daily functions of diplomatic missions in Latin America, and life after civil service taught and inspired myself and our members greatly, all the while educating us in the importance of government cooperation in international commerce.

Last but not least, Diplomacy Society wants to give a big thanks to Benjamin Boudreaux from RAND Corporation who spoke on the "Challenges and Opportunities in AI Policy", enlightening the audience on the importance of ethics in the age of AI and the role that governments will need to play to ensure human rights and safety. Loss of control, AI military technology, and AI's impact on international competition and geopolitical stability gave Diplomacy Society much to think on.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the club this quarter and our members. We also want to thank UCSB AS Internal Vice President Enri Lala for presenting on the geopolitical tensions in the Balkans and sharing deep insights into the region's complex and often misunderstood history. Diplomacy Society is deeply grateful to be working with so many future leaders.

Hi! My name is Nina Rossi and I am a second year Political Science and Economics double major. I’m passionate about international relations, global security, and economic policy, and I’m excited to serve as Treasurer for UCSB Diplomacy Society. I’m looking forward to helping the club grow and creating opportunities for students to explore diplomacy together.

Outside of class, I enjoy traveling, reading, and exploring different types of markets around the world . I can’t wait to meet new members this year and help make Diplomacy Society an engaging and welcoming community at UCSB!
