Fei Cha +

This starts off with Fei Cha Rolls that I’ve been working on for over a year now and have had two in-person lessons from @yonniccolins early last year and early this year! They are very difficult and I still don’t have them polished but I’m definitely feeling them and hope to have them on lock within a year. Ideally they never leave the hand and arm, rolling in a continuous sequence from the back of the arm to the back finger tips back up the front of the hand toward the forearm - then repeat the cycle. The staff is always rolling in the same direction (like a dragon staff) and transitions rolling toward and away from the body when it goes vertical! The movement is very complex which is why it has taken over a year and a half for me to learn, but success feels so delightful!

I’ve also been working hard on entry and exit transitions for Fei Cha Rolls and the first one in this reel is my favorite so far - the entry is a forward fishtail and the exit is a toss to reverse fishtail - all in contact staff mode (no gripping)!

The second Fei Cha in this reel switches to my non-dominant hand and has an armpit vertical handroll entry and the exit a toss to reverse fishtail! The third is the same but with my dominant hand.

The last half of this reel is the first Fei Cha plus the combo that followed. This is followed by a final Fei Cha with the same entry and an exit to grip - done earlier than the first and finishing with a sequence of fun tricks plus the Rocky Mountain Front Range scenery is so beautiful on this rare cloudy day! AND if you look closely you can find Ziti (our doggo)!

BIG FAM ❤️‍🔥

It was a weekend to remember.

So much goes into an experience of this nature and it’s beautiful to take part in and witness what humans are capable of when we come together in the spirit of co-creation.

Many within our collective have been navigating the more turbulent aspects of being alive: major life shifts, health and financial hardship & facing the unknown head on. Despite every obstacle, we showed up. We navigated with grace, we kept our hearts open and we stayed united throughout the intensity.

Community and movement are the antidotes- They have the power to keep us connected and allow us to process what we’re moving through alongside and with the support of others. A medicine beyond words- A living, breathing ceremony.

🙏🏻 Thank you Yana of @haussparkle & Karley of @sacredkriyations.co for seeing us and inviting us to be a part of The Sanctuary, adorning us with your art and giving us the space to be witnessed in our movement medicine. It’s a blessing to hold a vision for artistic collaboration and to experience the beauty and power multiply when we come together and share our gifts. This is what we are here for.

🙏🏻 Thank you for the outpouring of love and support of this vision that so many contributed and poured their love and intention into. Thank you to those who gave it life.

🙏🏻 Thank you everyone who came out to connect in community & show up for art, music, culture, movement and celebrating life.

We are being refined and these are the things that will get us to the other side. May we all carry the medicine and remembering that happens within festival spaces into our everyday life.

Infinite gratitude.

What Lies Beneath!

What lies beneath this thumbnail are three fire tricks I’ve been hoping to accomplish for the first time: Fei Cha Rolls, Interrupted Angel Roll, and 1st Fire Sword!

This starts off with Fei Cha Rolls that I’ve been working on for over a year now and have had two lessons from @yonniccolins early last year and early this year! They are very difficult and I still don’t have them locked in but I’m definitely feeling them and hope to have them locked in by next year - as well as working them into transitions from and to other contact tricks!

After the Fei Cha Rolls there’s a Rocket, then Whip Blind, …

Then follows the “Interrupted Angel Roll with some Reels” which I learned from @mirrapirate61 during last year’s Renegade Ninja Pyrate Holiday Challenge (posted December 10, 2025)! I absolutely love how it looks and feels with fire!!! Thank you Miranda!!!

Then follows a devil roll (I learned from Yonnic early last year). Then a little forward and reverse fishtails (I learned last fall) followed by a ninja strike, upper palmspin to crouching behind the back palm spin!

Ending with the highlight of my 1st Fire Sword experience throwing a Rocket! The whole experience posted August 27, 2026.

Backyard flow jams are absolute treasures! Experiencing close-up the creativity and skills of flow artists manipulating fire props into spectacular and mesmerizing colors, shapes, and sounds! And the camaraderie with Flowmies: supportive, smart, creative, talented, humble, always learning, sometimes nerdish, passionate, compassionate, …

Love to all my IG pals!

Love to @michelle.c.smith and @freestyle.staff who ignited and fuel my journey! Lovin’ the freestyling foundation!

Thank you @dinosflow for videoing and all your support throughout!

Protection can come in many different forms and layers. It can be an outside source that you rely on, or it can come from the inside and propagate outward into your surroundings and your people.

Be sure to surround yourself with beings that want to add to your flame, not put it out. Charging up through the stoke of my white dragon, dancing with her in the desert 🐉❤️‍🔥

NEW MOVE 🤩 or it's new-to-me at least🌱🐉 after working on cleaning up some angel roll tech with a contact staff, I found this dragonstaff loop

Most of my previous dragonstaff angels have rolled on a more pronounced diagonal between horizontal and wall planes, so I'm excited to figure out a better way to keep the dragon mostly vertical- now to clean up the stall and the footwork!

Horizontal and Vertical Armpit Handroll Out with Fire!

A year and a half ago when I started spinning fire I quickly acquired the passion - fire engages all senses in remarkable ways! I also realized that props burn for 3-7 minutes! … my staff burns for 7! It became clear to me that performance-level fire flow kind of needs a series of interesting artistic movements for at least a couple minutes - and up to this point I had been creating combinations 15 to 45 seconds. I had prepared a 2-minute for my second burn but didn’t execute it well - subsequently avoided fire and instead worked on new tricks. Still haven’t achieved a performance level piece - I’ve redirected my thinking to just enjoy the fire jams, practicing tricks and shorter combos - thinking eventually I’ll develop a satisfying performance.

I’ve learned that props on fire behave differently than unlit props, and therefore require practice with fire. Fire adds drag, requiring more speed when entering a release trick and also nudges to maintain momentum. Fuel adds weight which lessens over the burn time. So its a real satisfaction landing a trick for the first time with fire!

I recently learned the armpit to horizontal handroll out on my contact staff (see my last post) and had the opportunity to burn it, and it was an incredible experience - especially where one end of the staff swings under my arm and close to my chest! Fire safety is priority and in place. An outstanding summary of fire performance safety can be found at the Flow Arts Institute YouTube channel.

Also here is a vertical version of this trick followed by the shoulder-neck roll. Still seeking to burn a 6-beat “angel” roll - settle on this 5-beat.

Love for all my IG pals, the flow arts communities both local and IG! My @freestyle.staff journey started 5 years ago with @michelle.c.smith online tutorials!
