Nostalgia in Layers: Discovering Ninki’s Modern-Retro Still Life

Step into a world where the mechanical precision of vintage printmaking meets the warmth of a sun-drenched afternoon. By stripping away the noise of the digital age, Ninki reimagines the mundane as a vibrant, layered sanctuary of retro charm and cozy simplicity.

The Dining Table I Saw

Tokyo-based illustrator Qi Ren (@ninnnnnki) finds her subjects in the overlooked corners of daily life: a meal on the table, an unremarkable street, moments most people pass without noticing. In her hands, these fragments quietly become poems.

Her practice bridges traditional printmaking — carving, layering, pressing ink onto paper — with digital illustration. The result holds both the certainty of the handmade and the precision of the designed. Muted palettes. Restrained compositions. A quiet, deliberate stillness.

At its core is a sensitivity to negative space — what is left out speaks as loudly as what remains. In an age of excess, Qi Ren chooses subtraction.

I’ve been practicing still life from a shape first perspective on Procreate – – loosening up the lines, focusing on movement over perfection.

This little café moment (espresso, cups, croissants, cherries) felt too playful to leave alone… so I layered it into a bold mid-century-inspired dotted pattern with warm reds, oranges, and soft pink tones.

Simple subjects. Strong shapes. A little color rhythm. ☕️ ✨

Stillness can be its own kind of joy.
Mini Exercise #4 from @ninnnnnki Draw Calm online workshop. This time the focus was on mood as the force behind the details in the still life. For me, I wanted the mood to be quiet, calm and gently intimate. What do you think? Did I capture the mood? Would love to hear your feedback.

Mini still life exercise #3 from @ninnnnnki Draw Calm online workshop.
Gave Procreate pastel brushes a try for the first time.
Fought pastel brushes (the control freak in me)
Pastel brushes….mostly won.

Was it a struggle? Yes
Did I learn something? Also yes.
Do I KIND of like how it turned out?..surprisingly, yes.
