hi i’m jahniya! alongside being an artist, im also a violinist and minecraft teacher! the piece i submitted is different from what i usually create (digital art, traditional art, henna). i don’t know how to use a sewing machine, so this is the closest i’ll get to making my own clothes XD

Q: Tell us a little about your art!
A: the piece i submitted is called ‘weeping angel’, inspired by the weeping angels in dr. who! it’s made entirely of repurposed and recyclable materials - the wings are made of wire scraps and paper (hand cut and painted btw); the bodice is made of scrap fabric, cardboard, and paper; and the skirt is made of scrap fabric and paper. all the paper came from past highschool schoolwork, whether it be classwork, homework’s, notes, quizzes, or tests. i designed, built, and modeled this for my high schools Project Greenway fashion show, which was held to highlight the importance of sustainability in fashion. it won best design and inspired some of the pieces in the following year’s fashion show :p

“No history, no self; know history, know self”
🌺✨ “Kung Saan May Puso, May Liwanag” — Where there is heart, there is light. ✨🌺

As we celebrate this year’s Barrio, we honor the heart of our community — the Filipino American Studies (FAST) Program. 💛

Founded in 2006 through the collaboration between the Filipino Cultural Association (FCA) and the Asian American Studies Department at UMD, FAST began as a way to create space for Filipino American stories, identity, and empowerment on campus. The first FAST Gala in 2007 marked the start of a legacy that continues to shine today through AAST363: Filipino American History and Biography, taught by Professor Gem Daus.

💬 In these videos, hear from past/current students and Professor Gem himself as they share what this class means to them, how it has shaped their understanding of identity, and why continuing to support FAST matters more than ever.

Let’s celebrate our roots, our resilience, and the light that comes from community.💛🇵🇭
