Every year from September 15 to October 15 is recognized as Hispanic Heritage Month. September 15 marks the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, but all Hispanic countries are celebrated during this time. Throughout the month, we’ll feature interviews with student-athletes describing their culture and highlighting their heritage so we can celebrate them. To kick off, here are some fun facts on famous athletes of Hispanic origin:

Jim Plunkett - first Latino to win the Heisman Trophy in 1970

Tony Gonzalez - one of the best players in NFL history and inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2019

Maritza Correia McClendon - first Latino and black woman to make the U.S. Olympic Swim team (2004)

Myself and my teammates at NJIT Baseball honoring the brave first responders who gave their lives for the civilians in the World Trade Center Attacks 9/11/2001. I am so proud to be apart a group that can come together and honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice on one of the darkests days in the history of the United States.
Thanks to all the guys who participated in honoring the fallen police, fire and EMS personnel. We honored FDNY's 343 fallen firefighters, PAPD's 37 fallen police officers and NYPD's 23 fallen police officers.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

🚨Congratulations to Derek Soroa (Fordham Prep 2027) on his commitment to NJIT🚨

Derek has been a member of the Showtime Program for 3+ years and has had some big moments through his Showtime career. In the 2025 16u BCS National Championship, Derek started the championship game on the mound against a loaded Ostingers team. Derek tossed 6 1/3 innings in that game allowing only 1 earned run. Soroa also has been a major factor in the lineup as well, the left handed hitting infielder has over the top power and an ability to use all fields. Derek is Showtime’s 16th Division-I commit in the 2027 class.

NJIT is an NCAA Division-I program that competes in America East Conference. NJIT has reached the conference tournament in 3 of their last 5 seasons including winning the conference tournament in 2021.

Congrats Derek⚫️🔵
