Here’s some more detail:

2015- I got my EMT because it’s one semester course in medicine. I choose this because I didn’t have the finances to do more than that 🤷

I got my fire department job 6 months later. Because they were a volunteer dept trying to go paid, the wage that they were offering were extremely low and I was able to get in the door with no fire experience due to my current EMT. This was the wildest and hardest time of my life. Wildland was fun but structure is no joke.

2015-2020 I worked two jobs, including full time at my department, to make ends meet. The levy that would’ve paid me a livable wage failed twice, after the second time I was forced to accept that I would need to move elsewhere. I had been sent a few times on a type 6 engine to bigger fires but I didn’t even know contracting was a thing.

2021- During COVID, a buddy of mine went to NY on a contractor deployment while in medic school and couldn’t maintain the work/school load. She called me up and asked if I could take her place on a Tuesday. I went on leave at the FD, quit my other job, and flew out by Saturday. I did two COVID rolls and then fire season started. That first year I did 120 days single resource and FELL IN LOVE. I knew I found my thing.

2022 I met a man in OR who spoke of this amazing company called @nimmedical. When I called to talk to them after the season was over, it seemed like a great place. That spring I went on my first roll and met the owners. I immediately knew they were the type of people you only meet once in your life.

2022- I started paramedic school through an amazing program @nmetc_ems

2023- Passed my medic and started working for my same bosses through SoDak Medical at a long term contract in SD year round. I rotated in and out of fires around my FT position.

2024- I got rescue 3 international certified to be a REMS (or rope rescue) medic

2025- I started my flight paramedic program.

2026- I was promoted to Shift Sup and FTO within SoDak 🥳

While my journey has been long, I wouldn’t change a thing. I ended up right where I’m supposed to be!

River Street, closed to cars. Open to everything else.

For one Sunday in June, the road belonged to families, food trucks, live music, and a river most of us never slow down enough to see.

This year's River Walk was led by sponsors NMETC (National Medical Education & Training Center) and Welch Land Surveyors, with cultural programming funded by a grant from the West Bridgewater Cultural Council and the Massachusetts Cultural Council to West Bridgewater Open Space.

Follow these organizations. Show up when they ask. Open space stays open because people show up for it.

Since May, I’ve been deep in the books (and videos), practicing skills, and pushing through every challenge… and it’s official: I’ve completed my Emergency Medical Technician course! 🚑

✅ 93% on my school exam
✅ Passed all the practicals
✅ Passed all the State tests

It’s been a long road, but one worth every step. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family, friends, classmates, and mentors who kept me moving forward.

This certificate may have my name on it, but it represents a lot of people that had my back. 🙌

We would like to congratulate Firefighter/Paramedic Alyssa Rathbun for successfully completing the National Medical Education & Training Center Paramedic program and obtaining her National Registry Paramedic Certification!

The @nmetc_ems program is 18 months and 1200 hours of intense learning and clinical time in the hospital and field setting.

Paramedics are advanced providers of emergency medical care who often serve as leaders of their teams. They start IV’s, give medication, as well as use advanced airway management techniques to help patients breathe. They are trained in advanced cardiac life support and make transport decisions to take patients to the most appropriate hospitals. Alyssa makes the 15th Paramedic on staff at SBFD.

Congratulations Alyssa!

Yesterday, students from Idaho State University, National Medical Education and Training Center and the Emergency Services National Academy took part in advanced airway training day prior to starting their Paramedic Internships. We are providing internships for employees at our partner agencies Caldwell Fire Department and Air St. Luke’s as well as our own reserves.
