I’ve been on kind of a kick lately with revisiting albums that first opened the door to artists I later explored more deeply..& this one is just LEGENDARY. Another Music in a Different Kitchen was the first proper Buzzcocks album I owned..& even after digging through their catalog..it STILL stands out to me as one of their best.

Nostalgia FOR SURE plays a part..but mostly it’s because the album is still just so damn good!

Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto formed the group in Manchester after seeing & being COMPLETELY inspired by the Sex Pistols in 1976. They were so blown away by that performance that they even helped bring that energy north by promoting the Pistols’ legendary Lesser Free Trade Hall shows..and they soon started creating music of their own as well.

Their self-released Spiral Scratch EP proved bands didn’t need a major label to make a statement..& it helped establish an independent blueprint punk would follow for decades. Devoto left soon after..but Shelley stepped forward as singer & chief songwriter..& the band became something even more distinctive.

Released in 1978..Another Music in a Different Kitchen captured punk’s speed & nerve while making room for melody, insecurity & romantic frustration. Martin Rushent’s production kept everything sharp without sanding off the rough edges.

Pretty much every song on this record is a standout: Fast Cars tears out of the gate..I Don’t Mind turns uncertainty into a perfect pop song..& the nearly eight-minute Moving Away from the Pulsebeat stretches their sound beyond punk’s usual two-minute blast.

The album established Shelley as one of punk’s finest songwriters..& its mix of urgency, hooks & vulnerability became a foundation for pop-punk, indie & alternative music from then on.

So yeah..to say The Buzzcocks helped shape punk almost sounds like an understatement..they pretty much reinvented it & showed the genre could be catchy, awkward, funny, wounded & deeply human all at once. And that right there may just be their overall greatest contribution to music period!
