POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This is LIFT Thursdays! Each Thursday, we’ll introduce you to one of our 2026 LIFT Awardees, sharing their stories and the projects they’re bringing to life. Meet Austin Peete.

Austin Peete (Cherokee / Muscogee (Creek)) is a musician, bandleader, and cultural organizer based in Brooklyn, New York. His practice is rooted in the intersections of Afro-Indigenous storytelling, electronic music, and communal creation. As the frontman of DEATH ON MY WRIST (DoMW), Peete blends electronic elements, live instrumentation, and sample-driven production to create genre-fluid performances.

In 2024, Peete founded No Stomach Studios, an independent, community-driven record label focused on fair compensation, collaboration infrastructure, and sustainable creative careers. Through events, mentorship, and cross-community programming between New York and Oklahoma, No Stomach Studios works to build the support systems artists need to thrive. Peete’s long-term goal remains returning home to create music and build cultural experiences that reflect the stories of the communities that shaped him.

Peete’s 2026 LIFT project, “The Ministry of Lasting Matriarchs,” is a debut full-length album rooted in Afro-Indigenous storytelling, genealogical research, and speculative mythmaking informed by his Cherokee Freedmen heritage. Developed through years of family conversations, songwriting, and studio experimentation, the project explores belonging, ancestry, labor, and identity through original compositions, field recordings, and archival samples.

The work will be shared through live radio broadcasts, deep-listening sessions, collaborative songwriting circles, movement workshops, and an intimate album release event in New York and Oklahoma, creating opportunities for communal storytelling, reflection, and shared creative experience.

These awards would not be possible without the generosity of our supporters. Help us restore a world crafted by Native artists with our cultures at its center: link in bio.
