Visiting Toi Moroki Centre of Contemporary Art ahead of the exhibition ending of 𝘌 𝘓𝘌̄ 𝘎𝘈𝘓𝘖 𝘓𝘌 𝘛𝘈𝘐 // 𝘛𝘏𝘌 𝘛𝘐𝘋𝘌 𝘐𝘚 𝘕𝘌𝘝𝘌𝘙 𝘍𝘖𝘙𝘎𝘖𝘛𝘛𝘌𝘕 ⛲️ Across the Pacific Ocean, people and ocean have an intrinsic and enduring relationship. The ocean carries traces of those who have crossed it, holding knowledge of tides and currents, and memory of departure and return. 𝘌 𝘭𝘦̄ 𝘨𝘢𝘭𝘰 𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘢𝘪 // 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯 positions the ocean as a vessel for memory, holding journeys and histories moving within us. Our connection to the ocean is an elemental understanding of who we are. It shapes connection to whakapapa, movement, belonging, and home. Like the tide, our understanding of these things are never fixed. They ebb and flow, returning in new forms, and finding expression through art, storytelling and creative practice. Curated by Brown Town, this exhibition brings together artists from across the country who respond to the kaupapa in their own ways. Distinct in form and feeling, the work reflects the many meanings held within the moana, and the eternal pull of the waters that continue to shape and guide us. 📍Toi Moroki Centre of Contemporary Art 66 Gloucester Street Ōtautahi Christchurch 11 July – 16 August @cocatoimoroki @browntown_nz Images (left to right): Noa Hāmana, 𝘔𝘢̄𝘬𝘶𝘵𝘶, 2026 • Evelina Lolesi, 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘭 𝘋𝘳𝘢𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 #𝟨, 2026 • Noa Hāmana, 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘶, 2026 • Darlene Jones, 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘖𝘶𝘳𝘴 𝘛𝘰 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘺: 𝘛𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘦 𝘛𝘪𝘦𝘥, 2026 (detail) • Tui Emma Gillies, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘢 𝘪𝘴 𝘏𝘰𝘮𝘦, 2026 • Darlene Jones, 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘖𝘶𝘳𝘴 𝘛𝘰 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘺: 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘊𝘶𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵, 2026 (detail) • Abigail Hau, 𝘦 𝘵𝘢𝘶𝘱𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘢 𝘬𝘪 𝘵𝘢𝘪, 2026 • Photos: Owen Spargo.

Current glimpse | noa hāmana at Studio One Toi Tū 24 JUN – 23 JUL 𝙃𝙖𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙖 stages conversations between figures positioned within competing systems of knowledge and belief. Through pūrākau and mātauranga, hāmana examines migration as something that has long shaped movement across Moana-nui-a-Kiwa — from Kupe’s voyage on a waka hourua to today’s cross-colony movement between Aotearoa and Australia. From @noa_hamana’s studio to the gallery walls. 𝘏𝘢𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘢 opens tomorrow. Wednesday 24 June, 5–7pm at @studioone.toitu “[…] Through painting and writing alike, noa reflects on experiences that extend beyond the personal and resonate collectively, drawing on whakapapa as a living continuum in which time collapses and the artist becomes a vessel for stories passed on across generations. Yet, these paintings reveal more about him and the emotional weight he carries than anything he has explicitly written or said about himself. He once told me, ‘You can’t get away unless you leave something behind.’ As a migrant myself, I could not agree more. […]” Curating 𝘏𝘢𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘢 and working with noa has been an honour. Join us in celebrating tomorrow!
