Pine Creek - Mill Creek
8/23/2026 - 8/30/2026

It has been almost fifteen years since I had last roamed through the bitterroot valley and inside it lays the first of the wilds I learned to love. I can still remember the goldfinches and flickers that I would see among the trees and feeders of my grandmothers property when I first learned to wander as a boy. How it felt as I walked out the darkened entryway into the bright summer sun after learning of her death.
How it felt to walk through those woods when I knew it would be my last. I had never truly realized just how small they were.

I first learned to birdwatch here too, and the birds I saw here are forever etched in me in the way that only something etched in you in as boy can be. The Clark’s Nutcracker on the patio or the transparent red of a hawks tail as it cuts between me and the sun and my grandfather there to point them out to me.

I originally wrote something because the book quote I wanted to use was too long. I guess I kinda messed that up but it was from My Ántonia.
