“Pilina: As Above, So Below” is a climate-responsive digital artwork by Jana Ireijo, a Hawai’i-born artist and founder of @vanishingmurals.

🪸 This living piece shifts with ocean temperature data from a @pacioos buoy in Kāne’ohe Bay - updated twice daily and stored on the #blockchain.

🪸 As ocean temperatures rise and reefs begin to bleach, the artwork fades - until only Hānaiakamalama (Southern Cross) remains. Even in darkness, the stars guide us home. When temperatures fall into the ideal range, the art regains its vibrancy, mirroring the resilience of coral when given a chance to recover.

🪸 Hawai’i team led by @inoa.ai - Blockchain Strategist:
@skylor808 - Web3 Developer
@whyhellomomentum - Marketing & Content
@nurdyk - Animation
@mollie_asbury & @erikaaamieko - PhD Candidates, Marine Biology, UH Mānoa - Environmental Data
@kamakaeu - Hawaiian Language & Naming

🪸 Launched on October 25, 2023, a portion of proceeds were donated to @fishponohawaii’s educational campaign, which encourages responsible fishing and enables more effective coral reef restoration.

🪸 With conceptual inspiration by the artist’s son, @noahaross

I’m so proud of my son and his teammates! For their senior design project, they created “Breathe: A Low-Cost Air Quality Monitor” as part of the University of Miami Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering. It’s incredibly inspiring to see their dedication to addressing real-world challenges through innovation and engineering.👏✨

Several years ago, I made a painting inspired by Damien Hirst’s dot paintings. I was in the midst of my “dogs as self portraits” series then, and wondered what his dots would look like if they had dog jaws. Then I noticed our stuffed animals matched the painting, so I convinced Noah to help me video the dots jumping out of the canvas. One of my early immersive art experiences 😂
