There are some parts of motherhood that no one really prepares you for. ❤️

This weekend I moved our son into his first apartment in LA for his junior year at USC… and I’m feeling about a hundred emotions all at once.

I am SO proud of him. Proud of the life he is building, the dreams he is chasing, the independence he’s gained, and the person he continues to become. Watching your child create a life that is completely their own is everything you hope for as a mom.

But man… it hurts, too.

No matter how many times I say goodbye, I’m not sure I’ll ever get used to leaving him here and getting on a plane without him. LA is a long way from home, and there are days when I would give anything just to have him walk through my door, sit at the kitchen counter, or hear his voice in the other room.

I know this is exactly where he is supposed to be. I know these are the years he will remember forever. And I’m so incredibly grateful that he gets to live this life.

But I also think two things can be true at once…

You can be unbelievably proud of your child for spreading their wings AND still wish more than anything that those wings didn’t take them quite so far away. 🥹❤️

Junior year, here we go. ✌️❤️💛

I’m so proud of you, Noah. Go make this year amazing.

And just know… your mom misses you before she even leaves. ❤️

To my first class at USC Kaufman: thank you for letting me aggressively overshare all my favorite things with you this semester. Dance films, weird references, computational art, headless people… honestly you all really trusted me. And in return, you made work that was vulnerable, strange, funny, emotional, and so moving. Thank you for allowing me into your practice ❤️
