VOL. I - CH. VII: “Room To Ball On Two Left Feet”

———

Never thought I’d be able to say I completed in a ballroom dance competition, but I definitely didn’t think I’d say that I walked away a winner. Of the 25 dances I had done, I had won first place in 15 of them, and walked away with a first place medal in my division. If you knew me even two years ago, you would’ve known that dancing and I don’t really mesh well. Something clicked since then. Obviously, I’ve been line and swing dancing for the past year and a half or so, but this new world of dancing was discovered right after I graduated.

I wanted to get better at leading in swing dancing, but then someone took a chance on me, saw some potential, and decided to teach me more than just country swing. Over the course of a year or so, I’ve learned fundamentals of cha-cha, rumba, east-coast swing, bolero, and mambo, and after many schedule bumps in the road, finally had the chance to prove myself in an actual competition setting.

My original partner (and teacher) was still injured, so we pivoted to a very talented individual who made the whole thing both entertaining, yet also fulfilling. Shoutout to both my dance partners in that case!

Now I definitely wasn’t prepared to be essentially orange/bronze, with a helmet of slick hair, in a Latin costume, but if I couldn’t commit to the bit, well then I wouldn’t be me anymore. Expect the unexpected, but get outside your comfort zone. Considering it took over an hour to return to looking normal, I’d say I had successfully moved out of my comfort zone.

All of that said, I had an amazing time, I’m proud of myself, and I look forward to wherever this road leads next, especially since my OG partner is healing up (we need our redemption). Who knows? I may pick up another hobby I can compete in, or learn something else in the world of dancing. For now, I’m gonna relish in the hard work paid off, and that sweet first place medal…
