It was such a tremendous pleasure to work on the documentary Saigon Story: Two Shootings in the Forest Kingdom. I am elated to hear how well its premiere went at Hot Docs… where it won best Canadian feature documentary!
Snapped February 1, 1968, the iconic photo “Saigon Execution” redefined the Vietnam War, forever changing Americans’ view on the conflict. It also changed and scarred those personally involved and their families. That intimate story is the focus of Kim Nguyen’s documentary. The film is a meditation on the suffering and secrets left in the wake of the Vietnam War.
📷 My role on this film was uniquely challenging. I was tasked with finding the last known individual alive who was present that fateful day the photo was taken. It took a painstaking investigation to locate this person. Until the very end, it felt impossible. But I found him, and after many visits to his house, he agreed to let me record an audio interview. For the first time in over 50 years, he shared his experience and recollection of the Vietnam War. This encounter is one of the most touching, spectacular and meaningful experiences I’ve had 🏆 #bestcanadiansocumentaryfeature @hotdocs_ @noblenab @nobletelevision @onf_nfb

Some filmmakers tell great stories. Alison Duke finds the ones nobody else is telling, and makes sure the world can’t look away. Alison having FIVE Canadian Screen Award nominations this season across two extraordinary films is not a coincidence: producing, directing and writing Bam Bam: The Sister Nancy Story with us at OYA Media Group then directing and writing Michelle Ross: Unknown Icon with our friends at Noble Television. It’s the result of over two decades of fearless, intentional storytelling, writing, directing, and producing with the same level of care and conviction every single time. This is what it looks like when a filmmaker is operating at the very top of her craft. Academy members, both films are streaming now. Please watch, then vote.
