Today’s post is for the incomparable @purimflora

At 18, I was obsessed with “Spain” (from Chick Corea’s Light as a Feather). That song helped shape my vocabulary as a jazz pianist, and I never imagined I’d one day record with the singer on the original.

I met Flora through her daughter, amazing singer @dianapurim , whom @veraheartbeatmusic and @nobresil introduced me to when I first moved to Los Angeles in 2017.

During the pandemic, Diana called: “My mom is recording a new album. Would you write an arrangement for her?” You can guess my answer. “Hold on, she’ll call you.” Ten minutes later, I was on the phone with Flora.

In those uncertain times, one of my greatest idols became a dear friend, with unforgettable calls full of stories about my jazz heroes, laughter, and plans for her album, all while hoping for better days.

The album, If You Will, is stunning, and we were Grammy-nominated for Best Jazz Album in 2023.

This song is “You’re Everything.” Do check out Flora’s original version too.

Music keeps taking me to special places and moments, and bringing amazing people into my life. I’m so grateful for it.

Viva Flora, viva a força da música!

Performed on Despierta América (Univision) this morning, promoting “No Soy Gringo” (Redux)! It was especially meaningful having some of the young students from NSU University School join me as my band. A huge thank you to my dear musical brother, Raúl Ramírez, their professor, for making it happen. And, as always, much love and gratitude to Angel Zamora for making it all happen behind the scenes! Gracias a Milchito for recording it on her TV! What a beautiful way to keep the 30th anniversary celebration going! Now off to my hometown: NYC!

Y, como siempre, todo mi cariño y gratitud a Angel Zamora por estar detrás de todo y hacer que las cosas sucedan. ¡Qué manera tan bonita de continuar celebrando estos 30 años!
