Union by Noel Bowler
Published by @kehrerverlag
~
Union is a sober, methodical study of the interiors where organized labour takes shape. Photographed over five years across trade union offices in fourteen countries, the book turns its attention to meeting rooms, corridors, and back offices—the administrative front lines of the long-standing struggle between labour and capital that has defined modern industrial society.

‘JanFest’ circa 2006 the annual birthday house party
We couldn’t all fit in the photo.
My beautiful friend Siobhán was there AKA Diddy.
I’ll miss her at JanFest50 this weekend.
It’s been 15 years since I held her hand , and a whole lifetime has unfolded.
Christmas can be hard when the celebrations are minus a loved one.
I’ve plans to read a letter she wrote to me later tonight, and remember her with love.
And dance me arse off over the weekend; she’d have loved that.

It is estimated that, in the past decade, around 30,000 people have lost their lives attempting to cross the Mediterranean from Africa to reach Europe. Metaleli Bahari consists of family photographs of African migrants and atmospheric landscapes from Sicily as a meditation on some of the thousands of migrants that never make it on their journey across the Mediterranean. @89books @panospictures @lindyfayhella

Made over a four year period defined by economic uncertainty, increased worker insecurity and the decline of traditional work practices, Union responds to how the institutions of organised labor, designed to protect workers from exploitation in the nineteenth century, have responded to the crisis of today. Bowler's photographs document the interior spaces of trade union offices in 14 different countries, all with distinct cultural and historical differences and provide a glimpse into the normally unseen spaces where the decisions and policies are created that affect so many. Combining photographs of these interior spaces with portraits of union leaders, Union is a journey through an anxious world where the apparent certainty of the past faces an unknown future.
Noel Bowler (b. 1978 in Ireland) is a photographer and educator. His work has been exhibited worldwide including New York Photofestival and Les Recontres d'Arles. Bowler has been nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize and for the Prix Pictet.

05/04/2025 Visiting lecturer @noelbowler presented his socially engaged work challenging students to develop their personal approach and find ways of getting to the right people when embarking on projects. Noel shared several of his long form documentary projects providing insights on how students can contact organisations. Noel’s visual approach centred around places and human presence in his projects such as “Making Space, and Joy. This was an amazing presentation and one which resonated with our students

The AAI is delighted to be hosting the Irish launch of Issue 642 of @au_magazine , featuring 20 houses by 6 Irish architectural practices.

*Link in Bio for launch tickets + magazine orders*

Join us for an introduction by Dr. Lisa Godson, @lisa.godson and a discussion with guest editors Tom dePaor + Andrew Clancy, as well as featured practices Clancy Moore Architects, Steve Larkin Architects, Ryan W.Kennihan Architects, TAKA Architects, David Leech Architects + t o b Architect.

From the Editors:
Tom dePaor and Andrew Clancy worked with Ayako Sato to edit this edition of A+U since January 2023. Given their last edition on Ireland was about the incredible work of @graftonarchitects , and that the magazine had previously featured work by @odonnell_tuomey , @niallmclaughlinarchitects and @mcculloughmulvinarchitects, the provocation from the magazine was to see if there was another generation coming.
We ended up looking at firms set up during the great financial crash and recession of 2008 – 2014. Particularly acute in Ireland, this economic situation was exacerbated by a state procurement system closed to new entrants, resulting in practices being solely sustained by small scale domestic adjustments, extensions and new builds. This context has resulted in a keen awareness of contingency, and the opportunities to develop territorial languages based on doubt, curiosity and care. The decision was made to make this an edition about houses, the first for A+U since Go Hasegawas global survey in 2020.

The majority of these houses are reuse and adjustment projects, with 20 works designed by:
@stevelarkinarchitects with collaborators @deepkaabbi and @noreilebreen .
@takaarchitects (Cian Deegan and Alice Casey) with collaborators @dhbram , Jessica Keller and @ronanlonergan.
@ryanwkennihan with collaborators Emma Kavanagh, Jarek Adamczuk, Colin Mac Suibhne and Oisin Jacob.
@davidleecharch
@tob.architect
@clancymoore with collaborators Erang Park, @magennisdavid @alexandra_pickerill Tobias Beale
