The “Dolan ride,” sounds like a hammer striking metal on an anvil and is what makes DMV crank sound like construction sites. Named after producer @DolanBeatz, the sound samples a single high-pitched triangle strike and has become a staple instrumental of the free car crank identity, a subgenre that began emerging from the DMV area in the early 2020s. Crank has quietly gained traction in the past few years with artists like @SlimeGetEm and @NinoPaid leading the way and pushing the genre to new heights. While some songs, such as “Me vs. Me” by @aeychino_ and @SlimeGetEm, rack up millions of listens, many go under the radar. So, here are a few songs including @skinopage’s “FACES” and @zelsounds’s “small ass burner” that use the Dolan ride effectively and are worth checking out.

If there’s one area that’s taking over the music scene right now, it has to be the DMV.

People used to think the capital of new rap talent was ATL, but the run that the DMV has been on has been something completely different. With collectives like TMS reuniting their forces to form one of the strongest alliances in the DMV, alongside a new generation of artists showing their ability to completely spaz on beats without relying on heavy AutoTune or simply replicating what everyone else is doing, the region has developed a sound and identity of its own.

From the flows to the production and the sheer amount of talent coming out of the area, the DMV has been making a serious case for itself as one of the biggest hubs for rap right now.

What do you guys think of DMV rap? Who is your favorite DMV rapper? 🐮
