Kaminey | 2009 | Hindi | Vishal Bhardwaj

Kaminey shouldn't just be a recommendation, it should be a celebration. Celebration of good, quality cinema which makes you feel grateful for having watched it. Directed by the sinfully talented Vishal Bhardwaj, the film deals with multiple narratives, all of which are beautifully interwoven with each other. It is a fast-paced roller coaster ride that takes you into a world which is dark, corrupt and wild.

Kaminey is about Charlie and Guddu(both played by Shahid Kapoor), two estranged twin brothers, who find their lives interwined when Charlie takes a "shortcut" in order to get rich and Guddu is forced to marry his girlfriend Sweety(Priyanka Chopra) due to an unplanned pregnancy. This one line synopsis would have been enough to instill curiosity in the audiences, but Bharadwaj had other plans. So we get Charlie with a lisp(he says 'f' for every 's') and Guddu who stutters.

With top-notch performances, powerful sound design, raw visuals, and brilliant writing, it is one of the very few Indian films that gets the neo-noir genre right. Shahid Kapoor plays both the roles with equal finesse and shows his range as an actor. He is one of the finest we have. Priyanka Chopra is convincing in her portrayal of a Marathi Mulgi who is mainly vulnerable but equally ballsy when the situation demands.
The remaining primary cast has also done a terrific job. Chandan Roy Sanyal as Mikhail is so good(especially in the scene at Charlie's house). Amole Gupte as Bhope Bhau is a surprisingly apt casting. Tenzing Nima as Tashi plays his character with an inhereht swag.
Special mention to the policemen duo of Lobo and Lele played exceptionally well by Shiv Subrahmanyam and Hrishikesh Joshi respectively. I wish there was a spin-off with Lobo and Lele in it.

Watch Kaminey for the sheer brilliance of Vishal Bhardwaj.

It is currently streaming on Netflix.

#DeepCut: This is the moment in Vishal Bhardwaj's Omkara when all of Langda's (Saif Ali Khan) years old desires are shattered as Omi (Ajay Devgan) names Kesu as the succeeding Baahubali. Langda had for years thought of himself as Omi's heir, an important man, and with this decision, he is told that he's merely a subordinate, another fellow in the gang - "Apna Hin Bhai", as Omi calls him.

It is here that the poison begins spread in Omkara's empire. Look at how fascinating the progression of shots are in this crucial state of events. It begins from the low-angle shot of Omi and the minister, the highest powers of the empire that stand tall over everyone like Gods, taking calls over other lives below. The "lives below", on the Earth, is what we transition to next (2), where a crowd dances in jubilation. But soon their roar of celebration is died out and a menacing music takes over as the camera tracks in to locate Langda inside the crowd. This is a fantastic shot. Langda is dancing with similar rhythms as the crowd he's a part of, but Bhardwaj tunes his dance to that deathly background score, showing us how inside him, it is more a dance of death than celebration. "Inside him", inside the subordinate, is what we transition to next (3). This is the deepest pit of the empire, the rotten soul of it, and it is far from the view of the Gods watching from above, and this 'inside' is what will eventually bring the empire to its fall. Langda stares at himself in mirror, contemplating how his fate has never been in his control, how he has always been at the mercy of someone else, and the thought sickens. Perhaps that is why he smashes the mirror with his hands. He is effectively smashing the identity that someone else's decisions provides him, taking control, for the worse. It's the disease at the deepest, darkest of the empire that will eventually pull Omi, the God, down to his knees.
