Nadiya Mukhtar’s extended essay interjects in a recent debate about the politics of cultural authenticity, the uses of creative labor, and the normalization of symbolic authority within Kashmir’s expanding music scene. Taking Ahmad Parvez’s articulation of “Bollywoodisation” as a limited framework for understanding recent developments in Kashmiri music, Nadiya’s reponse in this essay argues that the invested explanatory force of such a concept relies far too heavily on a series of asumptions that remain insufficiently defined and historically unexamined. Instead of responding to individual artistic preferences or to the passing of aesthetic judgements, Nadiya’s piece redirects attention towards the conceptual categories through which those judgements become possible.

By elaborating on historical analysis while drawing from Pierre Bourdieu's sociology of symbolic power and several questions concerning cultural production, this essay interrogates the highly problematic notion of a singular and monolithic "Kashmiri sound" and the reductive authority that attempts to define its boundaries. In this mode, the essay situates debates over authenticity within a broader set of questions concerning classification, legitimacy, material conditions and the unequal moral expectations placed unfairly and selectively upon artists working under conditions of political conflict and institutional constraint.

Farewell,” Agha Shahid Ali
At a certain point I lost track of you.
They make a desolation and call it peace.
when you left even the stones were buried:
the defenceless would have no weapons.

When the ibex rubs itself against the rocks,
who collects its fallen fleece from the slopes?
O Weaver whose seams perfectly vanished,
who weighs the hairs on the jeweller's balance?
They make a desolation and call it peace.
Who is the guardian tonight of the Gates of Paradise?

My memory is again in the way of your history.
Army convoys all night like desert caravans:
In the smoking oil of dimmed headlights, time dissolved- all
winter- its crushed fennel.
We can't ask them: Are you done with the world?

In the lake the arms of temples and mosques are locked in each other's
reflections. #kashmir

•• IMPORTANT UPDATE ••

At a time when Kashmiri students, especially girls, are living in fear outside the Valley, I’m tagging a few kind people who’ve generously come forward to help.
They may not have all the answers, but they’re here to do whatever little they can. Maybe just to listen, to guide you, or to connect you with someone who can help. Sometimes, just having a compassionate ear makes all the difference.
I’m eternally grateful to each one of them for stepping up. Your kindness means more than you know.
Kindly swipe for the profiles. Save them. Share them. And if you’re a student reading this: you are not alone.
I am personally available 24x7 for any kind of help, regardless of where you are right now.
Also, sharing the contact numbers of our Parsa’s outlets located on major highways across Kashmir, in case any tourists or visitors need assistance while traveling through the Valley.
