Manjushri, Lord of Wisdom, as it unfolds on-screen. Sped up here, in the gallery it moves more slowly at the speed of a sunset or shadow.

Using the geometry underlying a traditional Vajrayana Buddhist thangka painting, it begins as a colorfield, grows into complexity, and returns to the void of interdependence. Not a video loop, but custom generative software rendered uniquely in real time meant to induce meditation on interdependence (or emptiness): that all things are interconnected.

Created during my residence at the Project Space at Headlands Center for the Arts (@headlandsarts) now open Thursday to Sunday, 12-5pm. The Fall Open House, Sunday, October 25, and a special dinner on the evening of Sunday, November 15, when I’ll make a presentation along with artist @yamengleethorp. @bitforms

Happy Mother's Day to mothers everywhere, and especially to my mother. A dedicated artist, here's my mother @norarezapaintings with me in one hand and a brush in the other, her palette of oil paints spread on a newspaper on the floor of the little cottage where I spent my early years. Certain Pretty Things
I have caught myself both trusting and not trusting something pretty because it's pretty. Art education urges some mistrust for things that are pretty in a certain way.

There is nothing inherently superficial about pretty, not when you zoom out and look at the whole.

The whole what? artwork, humanity, mortality, the existential things...

This morning I was thinking about what is pretty and why it's pretty. On this backlit screen, pretty little images are seductive. But I also sense in these representations, something more.

When I was in elementary school, I saw a painting by Maxfield Parrish at the Everson Museum and it filled me with wonder.

Which is no slight thing.
