I wrote this song featuring @janny2music

Channeling the pain of addiction & loss ❤️‍🩹

We are honoured to perform this heartfelt song for Max & Nova this FRIDAY MAY 1, 2026

MAXIMUS R. HAYES UN-GALA

Fundraiser ❤️

@ 6:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. PDT

4648 Elk Lake Dr
Victoria, BC V8Z 5M1, Canada

This is an invitation to have an impactful role on the lives of individuals as they move to achieving a beautiful life. We are asking for your support via performing for the May 1, 2026th event.

On March 12, 2023, Max Hayes died of a massive brain injury caused by a fall from the 3rd story of a Vancouver DTES apartment building three days earlier. He died a month and a half before his 26th birthday. At first glance, the fall was the tragedy but actually, it was the last in a series of tragedies Max endured in his young life, some of them self inflicted, others societal and systemic but all stemming from one incident that occurred while participating in something he loved somewhere he was supposed to be feeling safe.

A football locker room incident that may have been funny in the eyes of those who perpetrated it was a devastating act of violation to Max’s body and spirit that he would never recover from and radically changed the trajectory of his life, turning to drugs and the company of others who were also trying to avoid the realities of their own traumas.

Alcohol and drugs may have helped escape the reality of one horrific event, but they also made him susceptible for recruitment into criminality by individuals eager to exploit vulnerable persons such as himself and exposure to further traumatic events.

Max had an intense desire to over come his addiction and inspire others as a motivational speaker. The Maximus R. Hayes Memorial Fund allows us to support folk who are struggling on his behalf.

Initiated in 2024 by members of the committee of the Celebration of Black Excellence and Achievement, the fund will support those entering trades training, accessing rehabilitation.

Learn more about the live music room curator!

Kearse Samuel Werts grew up in the Vancouver area and began his music career with a degree in Recording Arts. Over the past decade, he has made a name for himself in the BC electronic music scene as a DJ/Producer, performing and working behind the scenes at renowned festivals like Shambhala Music Festival and Bass Coast, as well as various clubs and underground venues in Vancouver.

In 2019, Kearse’s musical focus shifted to include HipHop and RnB influences. From his studio at TrebleFive Music, he has devoted recent years to producing and nurturing emerging talent. In early 2021, he founded Northburn Records, a label and collective dedicated to supporting BIPOC artists in the Vancouver area. He currently manages The Hargrove, a vibrant new community space celebrating music, film, and the arts.
