POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Over the last few years, I have partnered through Level Up London with Kent Downs National Landscape @kentdownsnl @northdownswaynt as part of their Putting Down Routes Project.

The Putting Down Routes Project encourages new audiences from under-represented communities to the North Downs Way National Trail and Kent Downs National Landscape as well as upgrading and enhancing parts of the trail so they are more accessible to a wider range of people.

And Level Up London has been a proud community partner bringing our community of Global Majority Women to the English Countryside - a part of the UK that many of us haven’t always felt like we’ve belonged.

Attending last months event, celebrating everything putting down routes has achieved was a wonderful experience and opportunity to share the experience of Global Majority Women’s experience in nature - including the barriers to inclusion and also the ways in which this project created access, enrichment and belonging.

I wanted to shout out two women in particular, @saskialuqmani who connected us to this partnership and has been such a phenomenal source of support to Level Up London and leader in making green spaces more inclusive and @sarahmoon1972 Project Manager of Putting Down the Routes who is such an incredible ally and really listened and responded to all of our concerns and needs.

Looking forward to next year already! And congratulations to all involved in two years of Putting Down Routes.

Map reading 🗺️

Today we took a small group out to Hucking Estate to learn some of the basic map reading skills that can make such a difference when you're out exploring the countryside.

This wasn't about getting a compass out and learning bearings. It was about the everyday skills that help you understand where you are, where you're going and how to feel more confident navigating the outdoors.

We covered everything from contour lines and map symbols to boundary lines, different types of footpaths and using the landscape around you to confirm your location.

As an Ordnance Survey Champion for Kent and a North Downs Way Ambassador, I really believe these basic skills are so important. I'd love for more women to feel confident enough to plan their own walks with friends, head out with the dog or enjoy a solo adventure without feeling unsure of themselves.

That's why I keep these sessions small, with fewer than eight people, so everyone has time to ask questions, practise and build their confidence at their own pace.

And we couldn't have asked for a better day to learn, with beautiful views and gorgeous weather along the way! ☀️

Because the more confident you feel outdoors, the more opportunities there are to explore. 💚

Surrey 3 Peaks challenge

Working for @mindomountains guiding @dertour_de on their epic 17 mile challenge

What a lovely group of humans to guide. We started off with a few dramas and train delays but eventually set off on our way. Linear routes are always a bit tricky hut we handled it like pros. 👏

This was a first for me doing the Surrey 3 Peaks in a new order. It's great to keep things fresh! 👌

Everyone was so supportive of eachother I'm almost tempted to apply for a job their! 🥰

Looking forward to my next #s3p

102 people. One coastline. One very special day of walking, connection and community.
What a joy it was to join @muslim.hikers for an incredible walk from Dover to Folkestone along the North Downs Way.
We met at Dover Station old friends reconnecting, new friendships beginning catching up, introducing ourselves and getting ready to take on the day together.

Our adventure started with an ascent out of Dover in the sunshine, gradually leaving the town behind as the views opened up across the Channel. There were plenty of smiles, conversations and encouragement as 102 people made their way uphill.

This stretch of coastline is beautiful and it is also layered with so much history which we took in with every step.

Then came one of my favourite moments of the day stopping together for lunch and prayer near the Abbot’s Cliff Sound Mirror.
It gave everyone time to rest, eat, and admire the views. There was something quite beautiful about stopping there as a group: space for prayer, food, conversation, learning and simply being present in the landscape.
We finished the big day on the trail with a gentle stroll through Folkestone Harbour, soaking up the music, people and atmosphere and, of course, getting an ice cream!

Working alongside Muslim Hikers was an absolute pleasure. Bringing 102 people into the landscape takes organisation, leadership and a real sense of community, but what stood out to me was how welcoming the group felt. People looked out for one another, conversations flowed and there was room for faith, culture, friendship, movement and joy to exist naturally alongside each other.
This is exactly what access to the outdoors should look and feel like: belonging without having to leave parts of ourselves behind.
A huge thank you to the Putting Down Routes programme for bringing us together. The project is a collaboration between the @kentdownsnl and North Downs Way National Trail, working to make the National Trail more accessible and welcoming to a wider range of people.
