📚✨ EVERY HERO NEEDS A LIBRARY CARD!

Some superheroes pack gadgets. Some pack secret weapons.

Super Nova? She packs a backpack. 🎒

And she knows FULL WELL she’s coming home with it stuffed full of books! 😂💜

The graphic novel section will always be her first stop, but lately she’s been venturing into new sections, discovering new interests, and finding even more worlds to explore! 🌎✨

⚡ And books aren’t the only adventures waiting at the library! From Pokémon Club to Pokémon Card Trading, Nova loves connecting with fellow Trainers, sharing her favorite Pokémon, and celebrating a world that’s captured her imagination!

📖 Swipe through her latest haul from Northland Public Library! Of course, Pokémon made the cut (would we expect anything less?! 😂), but there’s a surprise adventure in there, too! We didn’t even realize she’d picked out Ghost Hog until we got home! 🐗👻

🌱 And we can’t forget the Learning Garden, where curiosity grows beyond the pages and there’s always something new to discover!

A special shoutout to @northlandlibrary for creating a space where young readers, thinkers, artists, and future adventurers can explore what makes them curious! 💜

Because every book is a new adventure, every discovery is a power-up, and imagination might just be the greatest superpower of all! 🌟

✌️ The universe is brighter with you in it!

Been marathoning books lately, so I haven’t had the time to post any that I’ve finished. Here are a couple that tackle two people who’ve made the world a worse place. Fitting, because the subject of the second picture is complicit in helping the subject of the first picture commit further war crimes against Ukraine. Shoutout Starlink.

Accidental Czar by Andrew S. Weiss and Brian “Box” Brown: Despite being a prominent person in our present political landscape, Vladimir Putin spent most of his life being relatively unremarkable. Sure, he may be the “main character” of this text, but all of the history happening around him is far more interesting. Awesome artwork. My favorite of the two.

Elon Musk (American Oligarch) by Darryl Cunningham: With the hubbub concerning the unflattering documentary about the world’s biggest disappointment, and the powers-that-be’s attempts to curb its dissemination, help yourself to this enlightening graphic biography. Very comprehensive. Almost exhaustingly so. Even though there is some satisfaction in doing a deep dive into why someone is awful, it’s still a book about Elon Musk, and any amount of time reading about him is terrible. Great narrative pacing complemented by engaging visuals. Check it out if you dare.

Been a bit voracious lately. Figured I’d include some graphic nonfiction in my reading pile to stimulate my brain. Both of these titles come from World Citizen Comics. Many thanks to Northland Library for letting me borrow an inordinate number of books.

Why the People by Beka Feathers (with art by Ally Shwed): Making the case for democracies, or constitutional republics, seemed like a no-brainer just a few years ago, but people like Peter Thiel have been arguing against them for a little while now. This book examines those arguments and delves into various forms of rule, ranging from dictatorships to monarchies to forms of government we’d find more familiar. There’s plenty to learn, especially historical information. It’s a lot to get through at times but very interesting throughout. Shwed’s artwork is a wonderful addition to the text, helping to make everything more palatable. Definitely worth checking out.

A Firehose of Falsehood by Teri Kanefield (with art by Pat Dorian): Human beings love being wrong, sometimes innocently, other times, in a more duplicitous manner, so the spread of disinformation isn’t necessarily a modern phenomenon. Throughout history, particularly in Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, disinformation was a crucial component of keeping all of the nonsense running smoothly. Recently, disinfo has run rampant online, with a lot of irreparable damage done during 2014-2016. Thanks, Facebook! As with the title above, this book examines an idea and plumbs its depth with historical analysis. Accompanying the flood of factoids is amazing artwork from Dorian. Having been in college when a lot of social media-assisted misinformation was exceptionally egregious, I could relate to the material a bit more. My favorite of the two.

I’ve been exceeding my goal for books read this year, but haven’t been keeping up with the reviews/posts. Here are some recent reads, perfect titles for spooky season. Both by Junji Ito.

I read some manga growing up, mostly source material for the few anime programs I enjoyed, so it’s pretty cool to read some that’s a little more unfamiliar, despite adaptations of Ito’s works.

Dude is a tremendous illustrator. Even in black-and-white, his pictures shine. Utterly fantastic images. Complementing the artwork are the corresponding stories. Most are pretty brief, others a bit longer. Some of them would feel a little short or hollow as standalone prose, but because of the medium, are slightly elevated.

Both books were engrossing and I flew through each with a disgusting frenzy. Feeling inspired to adapt some works of my own into a graphic format, as well as getting around to some projects native to the medium.

Above all, I definitely intend to check out more of Ito’s stories, and I suggest you do the same. Well worth checking out!

There are parts of becoming a parent that don’t always make it into the baby books.

The overwhelm. The intrusive thoughts. The feeling of not quite recognizing yourself. The complicated emotions that can follow a difficult birth. And sometimes, the quiet wondering of, Is this normal? Do I need more support?

We’re so happy to share that Village therapist Kelly Stawecki, LPC will be joining Northland Public Library for a virtual conversation:

✨ When Parenthood Feels Hard: Understanding Postpartum Mental Health
📅 Monday, October 12
🕕 6:00–7:00 PM
💻 Virtual via Zoom

Kelly will create space for an honest, compassionate conversation about the emotional adjustment to parenthood, including baby blues vs. postpartum depression, intrusive thoughts, feeling disconnected from yourself or your baby, difficult or traumatic birth experiences, and knowing when it may be time to reach out for help.

She’ll also talk about the signs that someone you love may need a little more support — and some of the ways partners, family members, and loved ones can show up during this season.

Because becoming a parent can hold so much at once. Joy and exhaustion. Love and uncertainty. Connection and sometimes disconnection.

You don’t have to pretend every part of it feels easy. 🤍

Registration is available through Northland Public Library, and registered participants will receive the Zoom link directly from the library.
