The Imperfecta Gallery, in collaboration with North Pole Studio, is proud to present The Island of Misfit Toys.

This exhibition presents work by Portland artist Davis Wohlford. Every year, Davis' art practice gives form to an evolving cast of handmade toys. Inspired by the fictional place of The Island of Misfit Toys, its characters occupy the margins of conventional narratives, finding possibility in their differences and agency in their own stories.

Hand-sewn, machine-stitched, felted, painted and sculpted from wood and assembled from found objects, Davis’s endlessly resourceful approach to materials yields creations that suggest personalities and histories beyond their physical forms. These are not simply objects to be observed; they are created to be played with, loved, and to inspire one’s imagination. The toys welcome you to explore an alternate world of their own, an immersive world that Davis builds and shares with his audience.

This year, that world expands into performance. Handcrafted puppets take the stage alongside a musical accompaniment, while familiar fairy tales are dismantled, reimagined, and given unexpected trajectories.

Opening Reception: Nov 5, 5–8 pm
Puppet Show: Nov 13, 4 pm

Davis Wohlford is a prolific, lifelong artist and the co-founder of North Pole Studio. His work is deeply influenced by characters, stories, and fables that resonate with him and bring narratives to life through diverse media.

The Adventures of Buttwole Man. A zine by @aaron.cunningham.94064 who is a resident artist at North Pole Studio.

at Sky‘s request and to Aaron’s delight, I read the entire thing aloud at first Thursday in The Pearl.

It was an irreverent hopscotch through buttwole man’s adventures and the highlight of my evening. 😅😂

If you were not familiar with North Pole Studio, they facilitate Artists with autism or intellectual disabilities, getting their work published, purchased, commissioned and/or recognized. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

North Pole Studio supports careers in the arts, and exists to increase opportunities for artists with autism and intellectual/developmental disabilities to thrive as active members of the arts community.

We LOVE how these shirts turned out. We layered them over photos taken by our very own founder, @natetrav, on his recent trip to Tanzania and Kenya, and love how it all came together!

LOOKING BACK | wow a year has flown by since we launched ‘LOOK EVERYWHERE’ in #Philadelphia! That time has flown by… but it was such a wonderful occasion with several artists present too. And what a treat it was to curate a show featuring 33 artists working from 30 progressive art studios across America. Embedding access from the outset, we carefully thought about how the exhibition could be accessed by many different audiences, and how to group the artists to allow them to be understood more.

I’m still very grateful to be asked onto the wider ‘Look Here’ project… keep your eyes peeled for a new publication out later this year focusing on progressive art studios and different voices within them and supporting them. Thanks also to Atelier Gallery for hosting, and for all the artists, studios and lenders to this magnificent show - of course, all those who visited too!

Johnson is joined by artists, collaborators, and colleagues intimately connected to the work of choreographer Keith V. Goodman (1955–2009) to recirculate his work into and through the community. With permission from his family and in collaboration with Nichole Stewart Graves, holder of Goodman’s archive, Johnson will lead a conversation with those who worked closely with him, followed by video footage from across his 30+ year practice as maker and educator. Where does the dance live, and how is it held, when the dance and its maker are no longer here to witness? A special program of Johnson’s exhibition 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘰𝘰𝘵 𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘭, generously hosted by PLACE Landscape Architecture. The gallery opens at 10:30 AM for viewing before the event.
