We started the semester off strong by hanging with YouthBuild North Shore. We loved showing them around campus while learning more about the incredible workforce training, education, and community impact they are creating.

Who’s teaching who?

Really grateful Salem’s Ward 5 City Councillor @lydiaforsalem teamed up with me at @ybnorthshore at @northshorecdc Thursday. We did a seminar with the participants & staff regarding wage theft and laws.

Businesses everywhere commit wage theft because they can and those victimized the most vulnerable in society. Companies that play by the rules are always at a disadvantage to those who don’t and many who violate the laws do so unintentionally. Salem has MA’s strongest ordinance and @mass_ago has been excellent, but it’s an uphill battle to catch up the purposeful as it’s so prevalent.

One reason companies get away with screwing workers is that the laws are complicated and we just don’t do as well as need to educating workers and companies.

One of my focuses is to not only connect the participants with unions, DPS and others that provide good wages, benefits and mobility but support in the interview process and beyond.

Lydia and I discussed the laws, what to be aware of and will continue to be resources for them collectively and individually. Perhaps they’re more prepared than many others sadly aren’t. They also received written detail and they now have the most current poster from AG’s office.

Of course, we had a little fun based on Lydia’s exercise relevant to the season.

Thank you to everyone who attended our summer recap at the Northshore CDC! We are grateful to be able to have the time and space to share outcomes for the summer's high heat project, and hear from Dr. Marcos Luna of the Geography and Sustainability Department at Salem State regarding ongoing air quality work.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! 🇩🇴🤎
Celebrating my Dominican roots in El Punto, The Point, in Salem, Massachusetts, where I was born and raised surrounded by a beautiful Dominican community.

For my maternity shoot, I visited Casa de Abuela, an installation by @northshorecdc that feels like a little piece of the Dominican Republic in the heart of Salem. Every detail reminded me of my Mama China, my grandmother, and the home I grew up visiting.

This felt like generations of love, culture, and memories coming together. There’s also a beautiful mural honoring the woman and home that inspired the exhibit.

Thank you, @NorthShoreCDC, for helping our community feel seen, celebrated, and connected to home. 🇩🇴✨

I love being a tourist in my city. This summer I learned about @northshorecdc Casa de Abuela. I went to visit and literally couldn’t believe my eyes. I really did feel like I was in my grandmothers house in PR. They’re done an incredible job with the exhibit. If you’re planning a trip to Salem I would add this exhibit to your itinerary. There is no cost to enter. For my coffee lovers they’re having an event Cafecito ☕️ at Casa de Abuela next Saturday. Sept 26 from 12pm-5pm.

Congratulations to the @womansfriendsociety on an incredible 150 years of women empowering women! Friday night was a beautiful celebration of its commitment to providing affordable housing and opportunities for women to rebuild their lives. I truly love this mission and was grateful to celebrate such an extraordinary milestone.

I was also deeply humbled to receive the Jennie Emmerton Award. Named for a nineteenth century Salem philanthropist and early leader of the Society, the award recognizes a woman who carries forward her legacy of generosity, compassion, and dedication to community. Her father, Captain John Bertram, helped secure the historic home that became Emmerton House.

I was surrounded by my village of family, friends, colleagues, mentors, and community partners who have encouraged me, prayed for me, and poured into me along the way.

To my husband, Milton, thank you for your love, partnership, and continued support. A special thank you to my father “Popa “ for flying from New York to celebrate with me. Watching him sing songs from Annie, read books, and make bracelets with my daughter made the weekend even more meaningful.

I am also deeply grateful to the @northshorecdc staff and Board of Directors for your trust, partnership, and commitment to our mission and communities.

Even while navigating personal challenges, God continues to bless and sustain me.

People often say wow you are so busy and I would rather take the perspective of my life is not busy but full. Filled with blessings, opportunities to serve and share my gifts and talents with the world in top of living life with my family, friends, and faith community. Congratulations again to @womansfriend 's society and thank you for all you do for those in need .

Who’s teaching who?

DPS Assistant Director Katie Nieman and mechanic Francisco (Cisco) & joined our @ybnorthshore class at @northshorecdc this week. They chatted about their unique paths - Katie proving women can do what’s been perceived as men’s work and better, Cisco joining the French Legion as a teenager and though he’s Puerto Rican he was perceived as just another privileged American and how that motivated him.

We discussed the diversity of the jobs, how DPS gets things done for all departments and that they must expect the unexpected.

Was also cool to have Ward 5 City Councillor @lydiaforsalem join us as she’s been a mentor for the women’s group and all excited she & I will be doing a seminar together for the participants next month.

Was a hot day so we got serious about our favorite ice cream or other refreshments. @cityofsalem
