Anyone who played Ocarina of Time at its release knows it was far more than just a video game. It was my first console title, a Christmas gift in 1998. I remember getting stuck early and setting it aside, until my friend Matthieu, far more skilled than I was, brought it back to life the following summer. Together we explored every secret, armed only with patience, wonder (...and magazine guides).

Only later did I understand why the game resonated so deeply. That same summer, I was leaving my small village school, my own Kokiri Forest, to enter middle school; a larger, unfamiliar world. Like Link, I was stepping out of childhood’s safety into something vast and uncertain. My father, between jobs at the time, would fortunately pick me up for lunch breaks. In those quiet afternoons, I felt drawn to play only one game : Ocarina of Time. It felt as if, while I was learning to grow up, Link was doing the same beside me.

In summer 1999, the French Nintendo Magazine released a CD featuring the symphonic version of the soundtrack. I already loved the in-game music, but hearing it performed by real instruments revealed its true beauty and its sheer brilliance. It’s almost unbelievable that such emotional, timeless melodies were crafted from only five simple notes, limited by the N64 controller. Out of that constraint, Koji Kondo built an entire emotional universe. Years later, when iam8bit released the vinyl performed by the Slovak National Symphony Orchestra, it felt like closing a circle. Ryan Brinkerhoff’s artwork, the ocarina-shaped window, the gold Triforce, the play of light and shadow, captured the same magic I’d felt as a child, and of course I had to buy it when I saw it at the local music store.

Today, that record means more than nostalgia. It’s a symbol of the man and father I’ve become, still reaching for those fragments of innocence that, perhaps, were never really lost.
