Chalking (2022) "What does it mean to align oneself in space and time? Five performers build and unbuild an idea of circularity. A specific language that is at once unfamiliar, yet somehow inclusive of the multiple aesthetics that the dancers represent is articulated. A language that in one way has the precision of an ancient form but one that is rooted in functionality rather than the decorative/ narrative. Chalking deconstructs a body’s rotational possibilities—turning, spinning— into a vocabulary of tension and resistance, inscribing absence at the very heart of the body’s presence with others. Chalking is a commissioned work for five ĀNANDAM dance artists from diverse backgrounds. Created by choreographer Padmini Chettur (IN) with composition by Maarten Visser. Development began in 2019, between Canada and India and premiered in 2022. It exists as a work for public space and theatre contexts. Snippet of my new composition ‘Mishra’. A painter paints with a brush on a canvas. A dancer paints in various dimensions with music. I melt with the tuneful musical composition done by Suman Sarkar and sung by Srijan Chatterjee. A pure Odissi dance called Pallavi. Beautifully edited by Robert Kingsbury. Costume by Neelay Sengupta. # #newchoreography #odissi #indianclassicaldance #torontoartist #tuneful #loveformusic #soulfulmuisc #passiondancer #odissidancer #keepdancing #keeploving #cretivity #newcreation

Our 2021 festival has drawn to a close! Though the virtual festival format was a first for us this year, our expectations were exceeded and we were blown away by the support we received. Thank you to everyone who made this year’s festival possible! To our funders and sponsors: Thank you for your enthusiastic and ongoing support. You are part of what makes our programming throughout the year possible. Department of Canadian Heritage @canada.council @ontarioartscouncil @cityofguelph @citywaterloo Guelph Community Foundation @speedriverphysio @downtownguelph @guelphyouthdance @cfru93.3 Guelph Mercury Tribune @guelphtoday @thedancecurrent To our festival artists: Thank you for sharing your process and your artistry with us and our dance community. We are blown away (but not surprised) by the incredible films you created during the most difficult year. The collaborations, the connections, and the artistry are pure magic. It was said at one point during the festival “Artists should be running the world'' and the response was “Maybe we are but the world just doesn’t know it yet”. To our technical team, board members, and volunteers: thank you for everything that you do to make our programming possible. The year forced us to do everything differently. Without your expertise, collaboration, and advice we would not have been able to accomplish everything we have this year. We are so grateful. Finally, to our audience and supporters: Thank you for being curious and willing to try something new, and thank you for loving and supporting dance in our community! In a time when we have been so isolated it was really extraordinary to come together virtually and celebrate the freedom of expression together.❤️
