Ngā Tāne tuawha 🍃

It’s easy to put on a workout. It’s much harder to build a space that people genuinely want to come back to.

Today’s Ngā Tāne reminded us that’s exactly what this kaupapa is becoming.

Ngā mihi nui to everyone who helped make the morning what it was.

A huge thank you to:
• @isiah.reynolds.3 for the meat 🥩
• @erinsnotonthegram for the unreal homemade focaccia 🍞
• @thewilliams_eats for the delicious baking 🍪
• @thedreadedbarber13 and @devlin.cutz from @kingssocietybarbershop for giving up their time to keep the lads looking sharp ✂️

Most importantly, Ngā mihi to every tāne who gave up an hour of their Sunday morning to be there.

For choosing to move your tinana, share a few bants, have a kōrero, and simply be part of something bigger than yourselves. Every person who shows up helps create a space where other Tāne know they’re welcome too.

He waka eke noa. Ngā mihi nui, e te whānau. 🤝🏽

Mīharo rawa Tikanga Talks 🫶🏽

An awesome evening of whanaungatanga and idea exchange. A lot of challenges offered, perspectives shared and practical lessons we can apply every day. A couple of those:

1) Whether you speak Te Reo or not - doesn’t make you any more or any less Māori

2) There’s a void between what is statistically and historically true and what people assume - fill that void

3) Governorship isn’t ownership

4) Pick one item/thing to call by its Māori name from here on out and never go back.

5) Time doesn’t exist, clocks exist. Time is just an agreed upon construct. We have taken distance (one rotation of the earth, and one orbit of the sun) divided it up into segments, then given those segments labels. While it has its uses, we have programmed to live our lives by this construct as if it were real. We have confused our shared construct with something that is tangible and thus have become its slave

Before you decide you’re “not ready for that yet”, “too unfit” or “too scared”… read this.

Meet @fionap2016
Most commonly known as Aunty Fi 💚

Fiona ran her first half marathon at 51.

She and her husband followed a training plan printed in the newspaper, and she hasn’t really looked back since. Around 10 half marathons later, she’s still chasing challenges.

But ask her what was harder than running 21km…
Walking into a gym for the first time.

She was nervous. She wondered if she belonged. That’s a feeling SO many people know, but not many people talk about.

Now, strength to her isn’t about lifting the heaviest weights. It’s about being able to get off the floor when she’s older. It’s about saying yes when her three granddaughters ask Nana to go down the slide! It’s about staying independent, keeping up with the people she loves, and showing those girls what’s possible.

Training also became her reset. After years in a stressful job, it gave her somewhere to leave the day behind.

Last year she took on Next Level Fitness Race, this year it was HYROX. Both we scary!

Her advice?

Take the step.

“Feel the fear, and do it anyway”

Ngā mihi, Fiona. Thanks for reminding us that courage isn’t something you’re born with. It’s something you practise. 💚
