POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I don't know why it feels so hard to articulate the awesomeness that is Erika Mahoney. It's deep. Erika is vulnerable and honest and lovely. I'm just so damn proud of her.

Erika's father was killed in a mass shooting while he was returning his grocery cart after buying food on a Monday afternoon. A ridiculous, disgusting, completely preventable act of violence turned the Mahoney family (along with the families of 9 other victims, and an entire community) upside down.

And the ripple effects are far-reaching.

Please read this week's Grief Tree. I am grateful to have gotten to know Kevin Mahoney a little better through his daughter's lens.

Inspired by the Monterey Peninsula’s coastline, Reading by the Sea by Eva Augustina Sinotte, illustrated by Harley Scroggins, takes readers on a day trip down Highway 1 to the beach. Through the eyes of a local family, readers learn about Monterey’s local environment and the meaningful simplicity of spending time together by the sea.

KAZU’s Erika Mahoney sat down with Eva for the latest edition of KAZU’s Green Room to talk about the inspiration behind the book, the importance of representation in its illustrations, and the message she hopes readers take with them.

📖 Swipe to hear Eva read one of her favorite pages from Reading by the Sea.

🎧 Listen to the full conversation at the link in our bio.
Reading by the Sea is available throughout the Monterey Peninsula, including River House Books and Thinker Toys in Carmel, Hacienda Hay & Feed in Carmel Valley, and Henry Miller Memorial Library in Big Sur.

It's been five years since Erika Mahoney learned her father was killed in a mass shooting.

Kevin Mahoney was one of 10 people shot to death at a King Soopers store in Boulder, Colorado, in 2021. Erika, a journalist who had covered mass shootings herself, was on the air when she found out about the violence at her hometown grocery store.

On the latest episode of NCVC's I Want You to Know podcast, Erika talks about the impact of the mass shooting on her family, her career, and her everyday life as she raises children who will grow up without their grandfather.

Listen to Erika's full interview, including her victim impact statement from court, starting Friday on I Want You to Know -- avaialable wherever you like to get podcasts.

We are thrilled to announce @riverhousebooks is carrying @reading_bythesea 🌊🌞 📖 🩵 ✨

Such a gem of a bookstore in the @thecrossroadscarmel that I even grew up going to with my family! Another full circle, full #gratitude moment.

We enjoyed delivering our books to the bookstore and felt so honored to have our friend Erika and her family, be our first customers there! We hope it becomes a favorite for them, for you and for our community. A few of our intentions with #ReadingByTheSea are to spark: joy, inspiration, connection, curiosity and the desire to explore Mother Nature ✨ We appreciate you loving our simple, classic story, based on how I grew up along our Central Coast and now get to reverberate back to my family too, plus share with yours. It is an honor.

I am 37 weeks pregnant here🩵💙🩵💙🐚 it’s all happening!

Not featured, how jazzed the kids were to be in the book store during nap time, Jasiah decided to take off his shoes and never want to leave the children’s area, reading many many books, Araya too, including trying on their cute reading glasses and traveling in and out of both doors several times. Ja or Sisi, also decided in that last video clip of him holding our book, he’d smash his sneakers in dog poo on purpose 😝🧐🤓😋😂 (and, Ray, in that last clip, was striking a pose as a River House Book Store mannequin:) Groovy times, that I get to look back at and have to laugh! We are so thankful!

Stay tuned for where Reading By The Sea will lead us next.

Thank you @riverhousebooks @thecrossroadscarmel 📚( @nprmontereybay @notesfromerika )

Stay curious and keep #reading

It was an ordinary Monday — until it wasn’t.

@erika_mahoney_ was six months pregnant, live on the air at work, when her phone started lighting up. A call from her mom. Then the words no one is ever ready to hear: there’s an active shooter.

What followed was hours of waiting, praying, calling, and hoping that hearing her voice might somehow help her dad hang on — before the truth finally arrived.

This conversation is about the moments where time stops, where life splits into before and after, and how grief changes everything you thought you knew about safety, love, and the world.

Full conversation with Erika Mahoney is now streaming everywhere.

⚠️ This episode discusses gun violence and loss. Please take care while listening.
