Some frames with their own distinct music as an ode to the musical month this october/rabi ul aakhir–jumad el awwal has been.
Interestingly, rabi ul aakhir (ربيع الآخر) in Arabic literally translates to “the last spring” while jumad el awwal (جمادى الأول), which follows right after, carries the meaning “the first of the parched land”. A moon in fullness that quickly transforms itself into a crescent is all that stands between these lunar months. This cycle of fullness and emptiness, emptiness and fullness.

And while the musicality reigns, so does remembrance and longing of all kinds. Fathima Zahra, daughter of the beloved, kickass rasool, was also believed by some to have transitioned through wafat during this month. Sometimes I think of how, Fathima and I, carry our sameness and unsameness – the sameness of our names. The unmatched unsameness of our love, grief and deeply impregnating softness and wisdom. Sometimes I imagine whether she would choose to be friends with me. Sometimes I imagine us holding hands in silence.

Today I resurrected the Chinese peony which accompanied me through the course of vacating a home-space close to my skin, skull, and silly heart, earlier this year. Like peonies, its walls were hardy and resilient, enduring the internal conversations and combustions of the solitary sapien swimming in it in kinetic stillness.

The soul of the space grew slowly, just as the peony, with cathartic paintings perched on its limbs, and films of dust that would collect between the buildings of books every couple of weeks waiting to be caressed and cast out like a lover from the moons past.

Everyone talks about the infinite possibilities that arrive with leaving a house and marching forward. Truthfully, moving from this space felt like the intense pinch of loneliness following the departure of a lover’s lips; inching slowly towards the end of the last page of a book that spoke to your bones. Moving from a person, place, or parts of these in the least, has a shade of deep loss coloured to it.

Nevertheless, it also felt like a nomadic journey from sinning to seeking forgiveness. Like shedding layers of my personality to reveal verses beneath and beyond. I undiplomatically honour with bitterness in my mouth the parts of me, and what I called mine and have held close, but I may or most definitely do not need them treading forward to be what I could be and hold what could be mine. Alas, the paradox is that what you are could cease to be and what would be yours could decease, both overnight or over the course of ‘moving’ months.

To all the people out there who were present yesterday for the book release event, I share my joy and gratitude. I am delighted and happy to announce that the book release was a grand success with many of my mentors, friends, family, and acquaintances witnessing the event. Here are some zoomed pictures attached for us to cherish the moment we shared together.
Eman Siddiq and Suhaib Abdullakutty anchored the whole event. It was a pleasure to hear them both.
Kabeer NV welcomed the guests and introduced the speakers and the author.
Hisana Basheer and Salmanul Faris did the honours by creatively designing the virtual release format.
Maryam Tayyiba supported us with the technical requirements.
Becker-Ebel Jochen released the book. Giles Barrow received the book, Annie Rogers graced the occasion with the first reading. Auswaf Ahsan, Rema K Giridhar spoke a few words of appreciation.
