Lace has woven its way through Aveland this month. Lacemaking is on the red list of endangered crafts (@heritagecrafts ) and with our proximity to the famous lace making city of Nottingham, the organisers decided that this was a craft worthy of some focus.
At Nottingham Trent University and Nottingham Castle Museum we explored the city’s world famous lace archives and discovered the machines that shaped a city.
Back in Aveland, ten beginners joined us to learn bobbin lace with brilliant tutors from Stamford Lace Makers and St Johns Lace; several of them are already continuing their lace journey with local groups. A tiny step toward moving this endangered craft off the red list.

What can this wooden cube tell us about childhood?

In this episode of Your Art, Unlocked, writer and art historian Lydia Figes @lydunishka visits @nottinghamcastle to unlock a unique wooden sculpture by Helen Chadwick.

On this wooden cube we catch glimpses of a woman’s body – in one image she’s crouched down, in another she’s wearing a white bra. The work, which belongs to a wider series charting the artist's childhood and early adulthood, is made more poignant because of Chadwick’s sudden and premature death at the age of 42.

Join Lydia as she chats to Abigail Spinks, Curator of Fine and Decorative Art at Nottingham City Museums, about Chadwick’s feminist practice and the unique legacy she left behind.

Your Art, Unlocked is produced by Art UK and supported by @bloombergconnects.

What a fantastic day with @njube_giant at @nottinghamcastle - I got to play a solo set to welcome visitors and Bruce ran some amazing workshops teaching songs from Zimbabwe. The participants took part in the performance and we played our set of songs as a duo - accompanying a great vocalist on finferstyle guitar I enjoy so so much! Thank you @communitreenotts for hosting us at your wonderful event in such a splendid venue

Traveling home after a fantastic day spent in Millom with this group.

I arrived in Millom last night, got into my hotel room, slept like a baby & was well rested for this morning. I thought to myself, let’s see what this group can do & see if we can throw in my new song & tell you what?
Watch the video & you will get the idea of how they did. They smashed and they are the very first group I have taught this song. So, thank you all for helping me build this little yet meaningful song (to me). It works & I’m gonna take it on the road.

@mrwillguitar & I did a performance during lunch time for everyone. I didn’t realise that earlier when I was teaching this song he was working out his guitar parts. Thank you bro.

Thank you to @MillomMusicSchool for inviting me to share songs from my home country. Let’s do this again!!!

I’m teaching & performing at the @nottinghamcastle tomorrow as part of the Black History Month celebrations. Thanks to @communitreenotts for inviting me & we shall sing this song with everyone coming to the workshop

Happy 20th birthday, Robin Hood ❤️

The TV show that became my essence and my guiding light, that shaped my entire life, that changed my world. I brought myself up on Robin Hood, and my morals, empathy, and character have grown from it. I modelled myself on Marian, hoped to be as kind, compassionate and strong as her.

From the age of 9, it has been there to provide friendship, companionship, and family, a television show from which my lifelong, only constant special interest sprouted from and which has allowed me to live so intensely. It has given me memories that I will treasure forever, and taken me to places that fill my dreams.

I still turn to it. I always will. It is something to hold and something to smooth the edges of the world.

Here are just a few of the thousands of photos from over the years.

Now and forever, Robin Hood, and thank you ❤️

NOTE: One of the greatest joys of this year and my entire life was receiving this signed photo and message from Lucy Griffiths (Marian) earlier this year in response to a message I sent via carrier pigeon (aka a very excellent friend) and I wish I could say just how much it meant the world to me in one of the hardest years of my little life.
