Last night the NY theater community showed up en masse in solidarity with @thefreedomtheatre in Jenin, Palestine. In response to IDF’s attacks on the theatre, the violent arrests of Artistic Director @ahmedtobasi, Producing Director @mustafa_sheta and poet/ company member @jamal.abujoass, who, with the exception of Ahmed Tobasi, still remain imprisoned, we gathered in Astor Place, in the heart of the downtown theater scene, to rally and demand their immediate release. Thank you to everyone who came out in the cold and joined this important action uplifting the power of storytellers under occupation. We heard from Palestinian activists and actors, theater directors, poems and segments of plays from the Freedom Theatre archive and were warmed up with the music of @taktoukaband @allimitecollective was honored to take part and we continue to commit ourselves to the struggle for Palestinian liberation and the release of @mustafa_sheta and @jamal.abujoass This rally was organized by local theater artists and @noortheatre @freedomtheatrefriends @allimitecollective and endorsed by @queersforaliberatedpalestine @jvpny @nationalqueertheater @boxcutter_collective Slide 1) @allimitecollective reads a scene of The Revolution’s Promise by @thefreedomtheatre with @the.nice.bryce @impeckable_timing @seb_bouk @nourhabbash and @monicahunken Photo by @kenschles Slide 2) Michi and @romainejnyc lead chants. Last night we joined thousands of groups around the world in an international day of creative resistance for Palestine. @ashtartheatre put out the call to present the Gaza Monologues written by Gazan youth in 2010. In solidarity with them and our community of @thefreedomtheatre, we gathered with more than 100 people in the massive @beelectricstudio to share these stories of survival, full of heartbreak and courage, bearing witness to the tenacity of the human spirit even under the most atrocious conditions. Thank you to everyone who came out to support in person and online and gave generously to ASHTAR Theatre’s fundraiser to provide mental health services for youth in the West Bank. And thank you to our powerful group of readers, performers and activists, representing many cultures and communities, for bringing forth the testimonies with such respect and love. Please follow @thefreedomtheatre for updates about the situation in Jenin, @ashtartheatre for updates on the monologues, and @allimitecollective for future actions and performances in support of Palestinian liberation. We will share the video recording soon.
