The Union Street Journal has been named one of 45 finalists in the National Scholastic Press Association’s competition for the Pacemaker Award. This is the highest-ranking award in all of high school journalism. This competition judges a year’s worth of our publications holistically, meaning they focus on design, art, writing, and photography in each magazine we produced. The Union Street Journal has not qualified as finalists since 1993, and has not won a Pacemaker since 1989.

The NSPA focuses on work from high school journalism students across the country, and stretches internationally as well, receiving submissions from the United Kingdom. Out of all 45 finalists, only 34 publications were in the category of news magazine or newspaper, which is the category that the USJ submits into. Out of thousands of high school newspapers, the Union Street Journal is now one of the top 34 in the country.

Congratulations to all members of the 2023-2024 staff, but also to the members of the USJ that came before us, and those who have just joined our staff. We are so thrilled at this opportunity, and we’re looking forward to which final five magazines are chosen to receive the Pacemaker title at our upcoming conference in Philadelphia.

Huge congrats to everyone!

The Union Street Journal took home eighteen Best of Colorado Awards from the Colorado Student Media Association. The CSMA received over 1300 total submissions from across the state in their annual individual competition that honors excellence in print, online, and broadcast journalism. This completion is extremely selective, and we are so proud of our entire staff for all of their accomplishments!
