A play by Mohammad Yaghoubi. It was such an honor to be part of this beautiful production. ❤️
This handmade costume was designed by the incredible @persian_goodies_com for Nostos.

What a rollercoaster of a ride,
from witnessing the January Massacre in real life to reliving it through this piece.
Grateful to have been part of this incredible show, and grateful for the trust @yaghoubee and @aidakeykhaii had in me to bring my vision to life and choreograph the dances.

Mohammad Yaghoubi's name entered my world in my teenage years, alongside several important Iranian playwrights; names that first showed me that theatre is not merely about telling a story, but a way of understanding society, relationships, and even oneself.
The first work I read by him was Winter of 88; a play that still remains one of my most important encounters with the question of how history, war, and fear can emerge from within a home and an everyday conversation. That same pull later became part of my unfinished thesis.
Yaghoubi's theatre has always been, to me, one of the most vivid examples of contemporary social realism; a theatre that reveals the political within the private, and shows how war, censorship, migration, fear, love, and collective memory live in the simplest moments of life.
NOSTOS continues this same world, but in a new geography; one where migration is not merely moving from one country to another, but living with memory, longing, identity, and a complicated relationship with a homeland that won't let go of us, even from afar.
The collaboration that Negin and I, through Mr. Violet Creative Agency, have had with dear Mohammad and the brilliant team at Nowadays Theatre on NOSTOS is not merely a promotional one; it is the continuation of a personal and artistic path that began with watching and studying his work, and has now led to the honor of helping introduce one of his newest plays.
And a small confession: before moving to Canada, I messaged Mohammad to say we were coming and that I'd be glad for any chance to collaborate. In that message I said I was a graphic designer; my only mistake was not mentioning that I had also studied acting and that I'm an actor too. Maybe that part stayed tucked away somewhere in his mind, and the chance to act still hasn't arrived :)))
If you're in Toronto, I warmly invite you to see NOSTOS at the Toronto Fringe Festival; a dark comedy about longing, identity, and empathy in times that are constantly shifting.
