Washington DC-based artist Mary Early [@maryearly] studied visual art, film, and video at Bennington College, and her work has been exhibited at the United States Botanic Garden, Washington Project for the Arts, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Second Street Gallery, the Austrian Cultural Forum, Galerie Im Ersten, Kloster Schloss Salem, Kunstlerbund Tubingen, the American University Museum, the Sun Valley Museum of Art, Freight Gallery, WAS Gallery, the Delaware Contemporary Art Center, and The Phillips Collection, among other regional and national galleries.

Her early work incorporated formed concrete, tarpaper and paraffin wax, fabricated wood structures, and, over the last two decades, surfaces coated with wax as a method of preserving or concealing an object within. Works in the last decade have relied solely on solid forms cast in wax, abandoning the use of any permanent armature. Temporary installations are guided by schematic drawings and plans, which then serve as a permanent record. For more context on the pictured work, please visit her website’s 2017-2020 Linea Series

Early is featured in the current exhibition “Tomorrow the Sun Will Rise,” on view at The Phillips Collection [@thephillipscollection] in Washington DC, through September 20th. Her work is also included in the upcoming exhibition “Common Things: Art and Objects in Public Life,” presented in partnership with the Hannah Arendt Center at Bard College [@hannaharendtcenteratbard] at the AU Museum at the Katzen Arts Center [@aumuseum_katzen] by Crowstep Projects [@crowstepprojects], February 6, 2027 - May 23, 2027

We had the pleasure to visit @exonemo - an artist duo formed by Kensuke Sembo and Yae Akaiwa in 1996. Originally active in the early days of the Internet and now based in New York, they traverse the boundaries between digital and analog, as well as the physical and informational realms.

In The Terminal, the central work in this exhibition, we encounter a digital Sisyphus. The most famous punished man of all Western culture since antiquity, Sisyphus pushes a boulder up a hill each day only to have it roll back down to the bottom each time he reaches the peak. In The Terminal, a computer, with a rock hovering over its fragile form, labors over random numbers generated on-site through chaotic phenomena. To fail at cracking the code means survival; to succeed means...crunch. This tableau perversely evokes surprisingly empathetic feelings. In an era that finds much of humankind becoming ever more suspicious of machines, a sad, solitary piece of hardware working in murkiness can actually move us.

#10Years in Los Angeles: On this day, 10 years ago, over 700 women and non-binary artists gathered in our Downtown Los Angeles courtyard for a remarkable, one-time-only historic portrait. Conceived by Venice-based artist Kim Schoenstadt (@kimschoenstadt), ‘Now Be Here’ (@nowbehereart)—a gathering of 733 contemporary artists that included @marykellyartist, @alison_saar, @BetyeSaar and Barbara T. Smith—took place during the closing weekend of the inaugural exhibition ‘Revolution in the Making: Abstract Sculpture by Women, 1947 – 2016.’

Through nearly 100 works made by 34 artists over the preceding seven decades, ‘Revolution’ traced ways in which women have changed the course of art by deftly transforming the language of sculpture from the postwar period to today.

Now Be Here #1, Los Angeles (2016) was organized by Kim Schoenstadt (@kimschoenstadt) along with Aandrea Stang (@AandreaStang). The group photograph was shot by noted photographers Isabel Avila (@isabelavila.photo) and Carrie Yury.

As we celebrate 10 years in Los Angeles, we’re looking back at the exhibitions, artists and moments that have shaped our Downtown LA gallery since 2016.

Yesterday hundreds of women and non-binary folks showed up for Kim Shoenstadt’s Now Be Here, a look at the community of feminist artists in Los Angeles. The group photo was shot by Isabel Avila and her care guiding the audience was exceptional. It was truly great meeting new young artists and revisiting with peers and elders. As we complemented each other, took turns, offered connections and advice;one thing became clear, feminists believe in letting people in, rather than keeping people out or creating hierarchies. It was wonderful to see that despite the oppression of the last 10 years we still have a community. No lines, no VIP lists or gate keeping in sight, just really cool creative women in fellowship. Yesterday was a reminder that we can do business on our own terms. Thanks Occidental College for hosting and a shout out to Kim Schoenstadt for her tireless work and commitment to the project. The first three photos were shot by Allison Stewart, pictures are AHC members Stewart, Mary Anna Pomonis and Taryn Lee. The last few photos feature women from the original gathering 10 years ago including the now deceased Carole Caroompas along with Rachel Finkelstein, Suzanne Adelman, and Lili Bernard. Thanks for once again bringing us to the table and helping us create more places women are welcome. @kimschoenstadt @nowbehereart @occidentalcollege @maryannapomonis
