Featured this week on @NPR’s @npratc, reporter Lauren Sommer takes you to Palmyra Atoll to uncover a hidden partnership between seabirds and coral reefs, and why protecting both matters in a warming ocean.

As part of the story, Lauren interviews Alex Wegmann, lead scientist for The Nature Conservancy and Katie Franklin of @nature_hi_pal to explore how seabird guano feeds the reef, how removing invasive rats and coconut palms is bringing back the native forest and the birds that depend on it, and why restoring that connection may give corals their best chance to recover from marine heat waves.

This story highlights the importance of protecting the intact ecosystems and ecological connectivity of the Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument — from native forests and seabird colonies to the reefs and ocean beyond.

Congratulations, Amit! Your podcast ‘What Happens to Memories’ was selected by NPR as the Grand Prize winner in the high school category of this year’s Student Podcast Challenge, chosen from 1,500+ entries nationwide!

What I admire most isn’t the win. It’s who you are - kind, patient, and thoughtful in everything you do. You cared about getting the science right and about telling the story with honesty and heart. In times like these, when so much feels rushed, I’m proud that you slowed down to create something with care and made an impact at the same time.

This podcast is also a perfect homage to my grandpa. His memory is at the center of this story, and I know how much he would have loved hearing you share him with the world.

This work has been part of my life long before I had a name for it. To see more conversations happening about death, dying, and how we care for one another at the end of life means a lot to me.

We all deserve the right to live, thrive, and age in our homes and communities. That right is now in jeopardy for millions of disabled people, because the federal government has eliminated the mandate requiring states to provide the supports they need.

We will fight this. We won’t go back.

Slinger Francisco aka Mighty Sparrow, whose birth-name was as fine as his sobriquet, with his mum Clarissa, c. 1956. He was born in Grenada
but it was of course in Trinidad that he became calypso’s king that year, with “Jean and Dinah” and a new kind of song-making — social, sexual, political, all in one — that also felt like the birth, as Trinidad strode toward its own birth as a sovereign nation, of a new kind of West Indian personhood: fiercely proud and worldly, creole, modern. I used to listen on repeat, when I was writing ISLAND PEOPLE, to Sparrow’s epic battles with Lord Melody in the tents from that era, as recorded by Emory Cook. I used to think, as I did: That’s@what Walcott meant when he described Trinidad’s verbal culture of picong and song as *hyper-literacy*. I was glad yesterday to speak with NPR’s All Things Considered about Sparrow’s giant life and legacies, across the decades since, and to recall the last time I saw, 6 years ago at Harry Belafonte’s 93rd birthday party at the Apollo in Harlem: still singing gorgeously, still fiercely proud, still giving Harry prodigious guff. RIP. 🇹🇹🇬🇩

NPR’s All Things Considered just ran a piece on a 20-year promise.
When I arrived from France in 2005, some of the first friends I made were firefighters. They showed me The Fireman’s Prayer written on the wall. I sang it back to them on the spot. I asked if it was already music. They said no.
I wrote the symphony anyway: children’s choir, adult choir, full orchestra, pipes and drums. Over 200 musicians! Every proceeds destined for firefighters. For 19 years the score waited.
Then Los Angeles burned. We lived blocks from the evacuation zone. Jennifer looked at me and said the words that restarted everything: “If this is not a sign?! it is time.”
NPR’s Karl T. Wright tells what happened next: the recordings, the musicians who survived the fires, our principal French horn player Dylan Skye Hart whose father was a fire chief, Pipe Major Jeff Hahn hearing the prayer sung with a power he had never heard in 25 years of ceremonies.
The last section, California Professional Firefighters Pipes and Drums still needs to be recorded and are scheduled for October 29th!
