Late to the Fork-tail train but you’d best believe I zoomed my ass down to Randall’s Island the second I caught wind of this strange fella. @nrabbuck and I showed up just in time to watch this guy put on a show for about 10 minutes before he retreated up into the trees. Remarkable find, remarkable bird, remarkable circumstances. What’s this guy doing DEEP outside his South/Central American range? Actually, it turns out that they are pretty known for showing up far outside their range 🤷‍♂️ lucky me. Needless to say this was an NY first and lifer for me.

Spring is here. I can hear the Pine Warbler buzzing, so it must be time 😈 Absolutely geeked the other day when we came across 5 at a feeder on Staten Island. That trip also finished my pursuit of birding in every county in downstate NY 🤩 Bonus Snipe for that last pic there. Probably my best looks thus far.

VICTORY SCREEEEEEEEECH‼️‼️‼️

I cannot properly convey my joy after having coincidentally found this beautiful little bird. I’ve been wanting this guy for 4 years and finally my patience has paid off. EASTERN SCREECH OWL YALL! Damn near shit my britches upon realizing this little guy was cozied up only 30 ft from @nrabbuck and me. I exuberantly and somehow quietly pointed him out, assembled my camera, took a couple snapshots from the car, and went about our business. Made sure to not be an obtrusive ass and not get any closer than I already was, minded my business, and moved on quickly. I didn’t think the day could get any better after my county Barrow’s Goldeneye but clearly I was wrong. Lifer 950 (or 947, depending on who you believe lol).

Good birds out in Jersey from my annual trip to Barneget a few weeks ago. We made a stop at the Lake of the Lillies to attempt a Tundra Swan that had been reported. Since it was otw to Barneget, why not? We pretty quickly picked it out of a group of about 70 Mute Swans. Great success! Equally exciting was the close looks at a group of like 30 Redheads. Lots of drakes too. One of my favorite ducks that I haven’t seen too much of. But yea, here’s some highlights from that day. Lineup is; Redhead, Ruddy Turnstone, Purple Sandpiper, Long-tailed Duck, Redhead with Ruddys, sea duck menagerie (including Harlequins), and Ring-necked Duck.

Northern Pygmy Owl.

This bird was magically manifested as we were walking down a hill and asked aloud, “is it owl time?” Not 5 seconds later I saw movement 10 ft from us in a tree. Lo and behold, this guy’s sitting pretty tearing into a mouse. @nrabbuck and I were beyond stoked. We even saw the fake eyes on the back of the head. Really special. Later that evening we heard an Elf Owl followed by Mexican Whip-poor-will.

Unexpected Barred Owl from recently. Hope this one stays around for a while. This was my first actual good look at a Barred Owl in New York so extra exciting for that. Also my first good look in a couple years so extra extra exciting for that.
