On the bright side, at least they weren't upset about the lack of Pigeons 🤷🏼‍♀️ Welcome back to Explore Maine: Subpar Parks Edition! I've been teaming up with @nrcmenvironment to highlight some gems scattered across our beautiful state. We've spent the last 8 weeks proving that in Maine, you're never far from a great place to get outside, and as hard as it is to believe, we've arrived at our last (but not least) spot! Info on all of the locations from this series can be found on NRCM's Explore Maine Map, a great resource whether you're a Mainer or visiting from away. This week, we're exploring Pigeon Hill Preserve! Pigeon Hill is about 1 hour from Acadia National Park, and it's a perfect spot to add to your list if you're looking for some additional, quieter hikes to round out your visit downeast. It's a short-but-steep .5 mile hike to the top of Pigeon Hill, where you're treated to expansive views of Acadia, surrounding coastal islands, and the Gulf of Maine. We connected pieces of the blue, yellow, and red trails to make a 1.5 mile loop, and were delighted by the personality-heavy educational signage throughout the hike. Make sure you add on the .25 mile round trip trail to the shore, across the street from the parking lot! A quick walk through the woods brings you to a quiet, secluded rocky beach.  While you're in the area, drive down the peninsula a bit further and visit the Petit Manan division of the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge, too! Camping in this area is limited, but there are some spots noted on iOverlander. We camped in the Xterra and had a lovely, peaceful night despite being close to the road. Just a bunch of woods, with 20+ miles of multiuse trails (hiking! mountain biking! ATVing! snowshoeing! snowmobiling!) and 12 miles of frontage on the Androscoggin River. Sure hope they replace it with "something a little more enjoyable" (their words, not mine!) soon 😆 Welcome back to Explore Maine: Subpar Parks Edition! We've got a couple more places to explore that prove that in Maine, you're never far from a great place to get outside, (even if some folks disagree). Info on all of these spots can be found on NRCM's Explore Maine Map, a great resource whether you're a Mainer or visiting from away. This week, we're exploring Androscoggin Riverlands State Park, just a short drive from Lewiston / Auburn! This park preserves 2,675 acres of—you guessed it—woods, abutting a 12-mile stretch of the Androscoggin River. This felt like the right spot to try something brand new to me... fly fishing! I've only fished a couple of times in my life, and never fly fishing, so it's a pretty foreign concept to me. But thankfully, my very patient and knowledgeable friend Isaac from @newenglandflyco agreed to take me out and show me the ropes. We spent the day floating the river on their raft, affectionately known as the SS Mustard. Isaac taught me the basics of casting and stripping, and I quickly learned that I am a very impatient caster. I slowly found the rhythm, and after several hours of practice, I mostly got the fly where I meant to put it (I did lose one fly with my overzealous whipping, though 😆). By the end of the day, I caught and released three perch, which are native to Maine, and I feel like I've learned to appreciate nature in a whole new way. 5 stars, would try again.  If you're not up for exploring the park via the water, there's plenty to enjoy in those woods! Check out the 4.5-mile Homestead Trail from the northern end of the park, or the 5.7-mile Pine Loop Trail from the southern end for a quiet, peaceful day hiking along the river and through the forest.  #maineart #flyfishing #androscogginriver

That's why we're working together as conservation organizations who care about the future of Maine's environment to push for a strong fix that protects mature forests and the connected habitats they provide to wildlife.

From protecting our public lands to extending the life of our gear, September was all about taking action together at our Freeport store. We’re grateful to the community partners, local organizations, and changemakers who shared their time, knowledge, and energy with us throughout the month to make it one of our most impactful yet. On September 16th, we came together with @protectancientforests, @sierraclubmaine, @maineaudubon, @npcapics, and @nrcmenvironment to stand up for our national forests and the Roadless Rule, sharing stories and offering testimony in support of protecting our wild places. A special thanks to Michael O’Brien from Protect Ancient Forests for bringing the event together and Sean of the @oshimabrothers for live music that carried the evening! On the 19th, @bckwdsdesignco brought new life to our gear with limited-edition Patagonia screen prints. On the 23rd, authors @annie_leonard and @andrecarothers joined us for a discussion and signing of their book Protest, exploring the history and power of collective action alongside local activists from Indivisible Freeport. We left feeling more informed, inspired, and ready to be the change we wish to see in our communities. Thank you again to everyone who showed up for our planet and community- we are excited for what the coming months will bring!

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess this person didn't do much research (or read the abundant warning signs at the trailhead) before attempting this hike 😆 Welcome back to Explore Maine: Subpar Parks Edition! I've been teaming up with @nrcmenvironment to highlight some gems scattered across our beautiful state. We've got a few more places to explore that prove that in Maine, you're never far from a great place to get outside, (even if some folks disagree). Info on all of these spots can be found on NRCM's Explore Maine Map, a great resource whether you're a Mainer or visiting from away. This week, we're exploring Tumbledown Public Lands, which has been on my list of places to check out since moving to Maine! This area preserves around 10,000 acres of mountainous terrain adjoining Mt. Blue State Park. It's anchored by Tumbledown's trio of summits—West, East, and North Peak—along with Little Jackson Mountain. Tumbledown Pond (also called Crater Lake), a 9-acre alpine tarn, glistens in the saddle between the peaks. We happened to be there during peak foliage, which turned an already unbelievable hike into a completely surreal one. We went up via the Loop Trail, the steeper and more strenuous of the two main routes, scrambling over massive fallen rocks and climbing up "Fat Man's Misery," a boulder cave you've got to wriggle through to reach the top. This route is more climb than hike at some points, and we had a blast! Like Big Spencer, if you love a scramble-y hike, this one is for you. I was worried it would trigger my fear of heights based on some things I'd read, but I was completely fine the whole way. We came back down via the Brook Trail, a still-steep-but-much-gentler way to end the day (if you want to bring a dog or small children, out and back on the Brook Trail is the way to go). Pro tip: If you want to do the loop, park at the Brook trailhead and walk along the road to the Loop trailhead to start your hike, so you get the unavoidable road walk out of the way up front! #exploremaine #tumbledown #maineartist

I guess I'm a glutton for punishment, because I absolutely loved every minute of this trail! This is actually from a 4-star review, but they had almost nothing positive to say about this hike 😆 I couldn't find a one star review for this spot (the only other time that's happened was Kobuk Valley in Alaska!), which should tell you just how special it is. We've got a few more places to explore that prove that in Maine, you're never far from a great place to get outside, (even if some folks disagree). This week, we're exploring Big Spencer Mountain - one of New England's 50 Finest, and an instant favorite for me! It's got a little bit of everything, and it's perfect for anyone who enjoys a challenging hike AND a great view. The first mile is a steady, relatively gentle incline through the forest, capping out at a beautiful view of Katahdin and the surrounding stretch of mountains. If you're looking for a fairly easy hike with a great payoff, you could stop there, but you'd be missing out. As you press on, the trail shifts dramatically into a steep scramble up rocks and roots, gaining about 1100' in the remaining .7 mile stretch. As this reviewer noted a couple of times, you won't find a single switchback (I'm sensing a theme on these Maine reviews), but the scramble up is what makes it so fun and memorable! In some spots, ladders and ropes have been installed to help you out. If the hike doesn't take your breath away, the view at the summit just might. You'll look out over the 100-Mile Wilderness, Baxter State Park / Katahdin, Chesuncook Lake, Ragged Lake, and a whole lot more, with the view stretching into Canada. A fire tower once stood at the summit, which I'm sure offered an even more spectacular view, but it was removed for safety many years ago.

As Jen from @redrivercamps told me: Deboullie is a place that gets under your skin. She meant it in the Frank Sinatra way, and it's exactly how I felt after spending four days there. I guess this reviewer felt so too, but more in the "under my skin like a blackfly bite" way. Welcome back to Explore Maine: Subpar Parks Edition! I'm teaming up with @nrcmenvironment to highlight some gems scattered across our beautiful state. For the next few weeks, I'll be sharing some of the state parks and local preserves that prove that in Maine, you're never far from a great place to get outside, (even if some folks disagree on "great" 😉). More info on all of these spots and more can be found on NRCM's Explore Maine Map, which is an amazing resource whether you're a Mainer or visiting from away. Today, we're checking out Deboullie Public Reserved Land, one of the most remote properties in Maine's entire parks and lands system! Tucked into Aroostook County just a dozen miles from the Canadian border and a few miles east of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, Deboullie's nearly 22,000 acres are scattered with 17 pristine ponds and a cluster of low, rugged peaks. We tackled the Deboullie Mountain and Black Mountain Loop, a 6 mile trek that meanders along Deboullie pond before climbing Deboullie Mountain and looping back around by way of Black Mountain. Deboullie comes from the French "débouler," meaning "to tumble down"—a nod to the massive talus slope at the base of the mountain. At the summit, a historic 48-foot fire tower (rebuilt after the old cab blew off in a storm in 2019!) gives a 360-degree view stretching all the way south to Baxter State Park. I summoned enough courage to climb halfway up to see the view, but if you want to see it you'll have to go do it yourself - no way was I letting go of the ladder rungs to take a photo! Between the fire tower summit, ample breaks in the trees to peek out at the expansive landscape, the stunning pond shoreline, and the scenic campsites, I'd argue Deboullie is actually just one continuous view.
