Applications for the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) study abroad scholarships have opened!

This is an all-costs covered program. If you're wondering whether or not to apply, join us on October 19 to discuss the program, what the scholarship covers, and what languages are offered.

Alumni from each language program will be present to answer questions and share their experiences.

Stay on the lookout for future workshops! Applicants will be paired with an alumni to help with applications. We will also offer support after the applications are submitted to prepare for interviews and for trips if accepted.

📣 Applications are now open for the NSLI-Y program!

Eligible U.S. high school students can apply for an intensive summer or academic-year overseas language immersion program to learn Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Korean, or Russian. NSLI-Y equips young Americans to succeed in the global economy with the linguistic, cross-cultural, and leadership competency skills needed for success in a wide array of careers.

The program covers roundtrip airfare and visa support, academic and enrichment activities, room and board, a modest monthly stipend, and more.

التقى السفير ديوك بوكان في سفارة الولايات المتحدة بالرباط بطلاب المرحلة الثانوية المشاركين في برنامج نيسلي واي، حيث ناقش معهم دور برامج التبادل الشبابي في تعزيز التفاهم الدولي وذكرهم بأن تعلّم اللغة وبناء روابط هو الدبلوماسية الحقيقية.

Ambassador Buchan met with @nsliy high school scholars at U.S. Embassy Rabat to discuss how youth exchange drives international understanding. As Ambassador Buchan reminded the students, learning the language and building real connections is diplomacy in action.

From being my first ever roommate on program, in Pre-o, to being my best friend.🫶🏻 if I had to choose one thing that was life changing for me, it will always be NSLIY and the exchange community. Ive gained friends, family, and soul ties I’ll forever carry close to my heart.

It’s crazy to think it’s been 2 years since the program ended, or 2 years since I last saw most people. I miss everyone so much. So grateful I got to reunite with Aaliyah in person, and hopefully I’ll get to do so with more of the NSLIY Turkish family soon 🫶🏻❣️

Hiking in Ala Archa National Park ⛰️

This has been such a great first week in Kyrgyzstan. Bishkek is an incredibly beautiful city with amazing food, welcoming people, and so many things to see.

This first week, we went to the national history museum, saw the “Victory square” World War 2 memorial, started our Russian classes at the university, and went about 30 minutes outside the city to Ala Archa national park where we hiked while taking in the gorgeous view.

This experience has been amazing so far. I’m so grateful to have a warm and welcoming host family and an incredible group to share this experience with.

tory Time: This is perhaps a little known fact for some of my new followers but many moons ago as a young 20 something I moved to France for three years (prior to living in Guinea working with Tostan International, a year in the West Bank teaching at Al Na Jah University under the U.S. Department of State Palestinian Faculty Development Program and a summer working in Morocco as a site director for the National Security Language Initiative for Youth a program I later managed stateside). I studied French from a young age and wanted to improve my language skills immersed in the culture - the best way to truly perfect any language - including my Arabic. I stubbled across a teaching job at a Lycée in the Rhône Alps region in a small village called Nantua but the most significant experience was the two summers I spent working at a French sports camp called Sports Elite Jeunes. French children would come for sports training (tennis and soccer) while also taking English immersion courses in the morning. It was there I learned to love soccer (football) and naturally became fanatical over “Les Bleu” (L’Equipe Nationale) and Olympique Lyonnais - OL. I recall realizing my language skills had a long way to go after France lost in the World Cup that year and I lacked the language skills to console 40 crying French children 😂. Saying “ce n’est pas la fin du monde” was not at all helpful…now I fully understand why that wasn’t the best way to calm fans down, particularly children. The French don’t play about football! I’m still a fan of France but it’s so good seeing Team USA make strides in their performance over the years. This is also all the patriotism I have to spare at the moment…but still…Allez Les Bleus! 🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷

I’m excited to share that I’ll be spending this summer in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

Foreign language and culture have always been a passion of mine and my dream is to become an interpreter. I applied to the NSLI-Y study abroad program run by the State Department and I’m honored to have been accepted. I’m so grateful for this once in a lifetime opportunity

I’ve been studying Russian for many years and can’t wait to spend the summer immersed in another culture, living with a host family, studying Russian at the university, and meeting the other students in the program.

I’ll be sharing lots of pictures and videos throughout the summer and I hope you’ll follow along.

Over the past several months, American NSLI-Y students deepened their Arabic skills and experienced Morocco’s rich culture through host family stays, local engagement, and travel across the country. Supported by the U.S. Department of State, this exchange program strengthens people-to-people ties, builds mutual understanding, and creates lasting connections between the United States and Morocco. 🇺🇸🇲🇦
