@rageintel - In 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed — and its nuclear arsenal didn’t all sit in Russia.

Ukraine held 1,900 strategic warheads. Kazakhstan held 1,410. Belarus held 100. Overnight, four countries had the bomb.

Within five years, three of them sent every warhead to Russia. Ukraine and Belarus had no launch codes. Kazakhstan had lived through 456 Soviet nuclear tests. All three got security assurances in Budapest in 1994.

South Africa went further: it built six bombs in secret, then destroyed them.

Today Ukraine has been invaded twice, and Belarus hosts Russian nukes again.

The U.S. has brokered a deal for the IAEA to remove nuclear material from a clandestine Syrian site known as “Site 99.”

Damascus agreed to the removal. The site holds yellowcake uranium and remnants of the former Al-Kibar program, material usable in a “dirty bomb” though not directly in a weapon. The operation is ongoing, with officials hoping to complete it by year’s end.

🧊 Britain Wanted to Build an Aircraft Carrier… From Ice

One of the most ambitious engineering concepts of World War II was Project Habakkuk.

British scientists proposed constructing enormous aircraft carriers using “Pykrete”—a mixture of ice and wood pulp that was stronger than ordinary ice and melted much more slowly.

A prototype was successfully built in Canada, but changing wartime priorities and advances in conventional shipbuilding led to the project’s cancellation.

One of history’s greatest “what if” military ideas.

This image captures a festive moment from December 1965 at the National Museum of the United States Air Force, where an Atlas SM-65 ICBM was decorated as Santa Claus.

The SM-65 Atlas was the United States’ first operational intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). It was developed by the Convair Division of General Dynamics and was built with a thin, stainless steel shell that required internal pressure to maintain its shape.

After its service as a nuclear deterrent from 1959 to 1965, the Atlas missile was modified and used for over twenty years as a space launch vehicle, carrying NASA astronauts like John Glenn and Gordon Cooper into orbit.

The museum decorated the missile for the holiday season, a practice that has become a classic piece of the museum’s history.

💣 THE DAY WE ALMOST NUKED OURSELVES — GOLDDSBORO, 1961

On January 24, 1961, a B‑52 Stratofortress broke apart over rural North Carolina, dropping two live Mark 39 hydrogen bombs—each with a 3.8 megaton yield.

One bomb deployed its parachute, landed intact, and armed itself midair. Five of six safety devices failed. The last barrier? A single low-voltage switch. If it had flipped… the entire eastern seaboard could have changed forever.

The second bomb slammed into a muddy field at over 700 mph, burying itself deep. Parts of it—including fissile material—remain unrecovered beneath North Carolina soil to this day.

For decades, the government claimed “no risk.” But in 2013, a declassified memo from nuclear weapons engineer Parker F. Jones told a different story:

“One simple, dynamo-technology, low-voltage switch stood between the United States and a major catastrophe.”
