On any given day, classrooms were filled with empty desks at Farragut High School, which serves students from mostly Latino and low-income families. The new principal knew schools were having problems with absenteeism. But this was a full-blown crisis.

Across Chicago Public Schools, nearly 25,000 high school students — or a quarter of all high schoolers — missed at least 35 days last year, according to CPS data obtained by @wbezchicago and Chalkbeat. That’s double the number of students who missed that much school in 2019.

And yet, the graduation rate has continued to inch up — from 81% in 2019 to 85% in 2024. Part of the reason: CPS students are given more chances to make up work and pass their classes even after weeks of absences. In short, it’s easier now to miss a lot of school and still graduate.

But experts say all the missed school is taking a toll on learning. Research obtained exclusively by WBEZ and Chalkbeat shows the more days a CPS student misses, the lower their SAT scores — raising questions about how much students know by the time they leave high school.

Farragut High School Principal Virag Nanavati and his staff were determined to steer students who were missing school back on track. This school year, they set out to tackle their absenteeism problem head-on.

Read the article at the link in our bio to see the concrete steps the high school took to address their absenteeism problem — and the positive impact it has had on students.

Chicago rapper and librarian (or Rapbrarian) @Roy_Kinsey sees rappers and authors and albums as books. The artist celebrates hip-hop as a literary art form while protecting banned books in his new special library: The @rapbrary.

As the city’s only librarian with 11 rap albums, Kinsey will take the stage tonight at the Chicago Library Foundation Awards tonight before fellow Chicagoan @chancetherapper will be honored. Ahead of the event, Kinsey met with Vocalo to discuss the Rapbrary’s future and the power of storytelling. Check it out at the link in our bio …

Our friends at @wbezchicago stopped by the Ramova Theatre ahead of its grand reopening — headlined by one of its investors, Chance the Rapper. Purchased by Emily and Tyler Nevius for one dollar in 2021, the Ramova Theatre was a relic of the past, with four feet of standing water in its basement and a floor covered in disintegrated plastic. Now, the @ramovachicago has been restored to its once-beautiful state, thanks to the work of the Neviuses as well as investors like @chancetherapper, @iamjhud, @quincyjones and more.

Learn more about the Ramova Theatre and see photos from WBEZ’s walkthrough at the link in our bio!
