POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Wanna shout out our pal @nukeseattle, who is behind the @lonelierthangodpod podcast, a great show that dives deep on Hum, one of the coolest bands around. In a recent episode, he had Andy Mueller on. Andy is a designer, photographer, art director, filmmaker, business owner, record label founder, & longtime visual wizard of HUM-world. In 1993, Andy founded Ohio Girl Design Co. @ohiogirldesign , a Chicago-based art studio with an amazing portfolio that looks more & more influential with every passing year.

He’s done image & packaging work for artists ranging from HUM & Shiner, to Castor, Braid, Menthol, Jimmy Eat World, Molly McGuire, Trans Am, & many others.
Across the late ‘90s & early 2000s, his Ohio Girl offshoot label Ohio Gold Records released albums by Dianogah, C-Clamp, the Zincs, & Pinebender, for all of whom he also did design & photography.

Really great podcast with really interesting stories and guests, especially this episode! Check it out! @lonelierthangodpod

Mark Thomas McLaughlin better known as Mark Arm was born on February 21, 1962. He is best known as the singer and songwriter of the band Mudhoney. Hailing from just outside Seattle, in 1982 Arm formed his first band Mr. Epp and the Calculations, then joined the band Limp Richerds with Steve Turner. In 1984, Arm and Turner recruited drummer Alex Vincent and bassist Jeff Ament to form Green River. Their sound would eventually become known as “grunge”, which was a mix of proto-punk, metallic sludge and rock. Green River released three EPs before splitting up. Arm teamed up once more with Turner, bassist Matt Lukin and drummer Dan Peters and named themselves Mudhoney. The quartet issued a steady stream of critically acclaimed albums, including such early classics as 1989’s Mudhoney and 1990’s Superfuzz Bigmuff. In the early ‘90s, Mudhoney was considered to be one of the most important and influential bands to hail from Seattle. But Mudhoney never saw the commercial success like many other Seattle bands and were unable to expand their fan base outside of their cult following. Arm has been a part of a variety of side projects over the years, including the Thrown Ups, Monkey Wrench, Bloodloss, the Wylde Ratttz, New Strychnines and The Saints in addition to guesting on albums by Alice in Chains and Gas Huffer and even issuing an obscure solo single in 1990, Freewheelin’ Mark Arm. Here’s to the stupendous Mark Arm. We love you Mark! 👊🏾 #markarm #mudhoney #greenriver #greenriverband #seattle #grunge #seattlemusicscene #punkrock #rocklegen #thesaints #subpop #sweetyoungthingaintsweetnomore

The legacy of Tina Bell has often been overlooked in a genre typically associated with white males. Founded in 1983, Bell was the singer and songwriter for the band Bam Bam alongside her husband Tommy Martin on guitar, Scott Ledgerwood (Scotty Buttocks) on bass and Matt Cameron (yes that Matt Cameron) on drums. Bam Bam contributed foundational material for the earliest incarnations of what would later be called grunge. While Bell was a contemporary and even predecessor of names like King Buzzo, Layne Staley, Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell or Eddie Vedder, she is nowhere near as remembered. Women have played key roles in musical innovation and are typically overlooked, especially black women. Here’s to the “Queen of Grunge” Tina Bell. SONG EXCERPT | “Killing It In a Quiet Way”

FOOTAGE CIRCA | November 2000 🦋

Thank You.

SIDE NOTE, Part I |
Playing “Killing It” was always very satisfying, particularly this middle section.

SIDE NOTE, Part II |
We all seem pretty psyched to be playing this song, but Gabe seems especially pumped. His stabby bits and harmonics are pure 🔥

Reposting this clip here a lil’ bigger than we did a few days ago so that you, the viewer, can have a moment to take it all in. Lotta bananas dynamics.

Three guitarists. Each playing entirely separate yet complementary riffs. Bass and drums hypnotically locked-in and zooming along. Not a note out of place. Not a moment wasted. Everything turnt up to 11. All hearts humming and minds moving in unison.

To this day, still very glad and grateful we wrote this song for LP2 with bassists Nick and Nate. As well, grateful this footage exists with bassist Robin.

Enjoy 🔉

JUNO | 🎨

COVER | DJ Shadow “High Noon” 🕕

NOVEMBER 2000 🌬📺

📹 | courtesy Robin Washburn ✨

Thank You.

SIDE NOTE |
When watching this footage in 2024, would have to say the vibe onstage feels pensive, deliberate, and very “lil’ dudes from the dark soggy Northwest.” Like a permanent rainstorm is happening in our heads. We all seem to be focusing very hard, hellbent on honoring the cascade of DJ Shadow’s notes. Not a lot of banter with the crowd. Perhaps this was the first time we’d played this cover in many months, or maybe ever? Dunno 🤷🏻‍♀️

Generally speaking, when feeling rusty or uncertain, we tended to go inward, talk very little, and let the overwhelming volume and energy of the songs propel us through the set.

Aside from the guitar malfunction during the first part, would have to say this cover of “High Noon” turned out to be a highlight of the night. Ferguson’s drumming is particularly bananas during the middle section 🍌🔥

As longtime fans of Shadow’s music, we released this cover on the JUNO / DPLAN split e.p. (DeSoto Records / BCore Disc), and looked forward to playing it in our live shows whenever possible.

Thanks again to fill-in bassist RW for playing with us this night and for providing this source footage some 24-years later. It is a nice surprise. Bizarrely good audio quality for a late-90s / early-00s handheld video camera 📹

Thank you for watching. Feel free to share, remix, and download this video. And if you haven’t already, please make time to deep dive into DJ Shadow’s vast catalog. Incredible musician and producer.
