June 29, 1941, my daddy, Larry Foster, was born. He would have turned 80 today. We lost him in 2007 to cancer but his enormous presence will always remain.

An interesting fact about my dad: he shared a ballot with Bill Clinton in 1992. It was Clinton’s first election for POTUS and Larry Foster’s first election as Mt Morris Township Supervisor. They would share another one in 1996.
.
.
That first campaign was a precarious one. My dad was a Black man trying to win in a predominantly White township. If he had won, he would have been our township’s first Black supervisor. The Michigan Militia (yes, that one) would have none of that. A death threat letter was sent to my parents’ home. It stated in no uncertain terms that a “nigger” would not serve as the boss of their township. That didn’t stop my dad from running — nor did they stop him from winning. And he would keep on winning.

Clinton was term-limited. My dad wasn’t. He went on to serve his community for 15 years, winning 3 more elections and winning over some of the racists who set out to stop him at the beginning of his journey.

.
One of my proudest memories of him is watching him sitting at their kitchen table in May of 2007, less than a month before he died, working as hard as he could at his job even as cancer was taking over his brain. He continued to work until he went into hospice care. He was a principled and proud man. A loving, generous, hands-on Cancer dad. And I am so proud to call him Daddy. ❤️
