Met at NUS. Built their careers and a life together. Now running a boxing gym. 🥊💙

Meet campus couple Yumi Nguyen (Science ’09, MBA ’15) and Johan Vu (Engineering ’10, MComp ’15)!

From late-night study sessions and banana split dates at PGP to navigating careers, parenthood and their own boxing gym in Katong, their NUS story has come a long way. 🥹

And their biggest takeaway? The people you meet at NUS can become your family away from home — and the connections you make can last a lifetime.

Swipe into their story, then read the full feature on The AlumNUS via the link in bio or here: https://nus.edu/4B9nvMU. ✨

It started at NUS where they found a community far from home.

Yumi was a year ahead of Johan and helped guide his orientation group through VNCNUS, the Vietnamese community at NUS.

Between clubs, campus activities and friendships, the two grew closer. No dramatic sparks — just a connection that felt natural.

Their love story? A little ice cream, a lot of late nights.

Their favourite memories weren’t grand gestures. It was the banana split at PGP’s air-conditioned canteen — a rare treat when money was tight — and long walks back from Central Library at 3am or 4am, talking about life and their dreams.

Over the years, they navigated career transitions, joined the global NUS alumni community, completed their master’s degrees at NUS, built a family in Singapore, and grew their careers in the technology industry.

While they both have their day jobs, they also run a boxing gym in Katong to create a community where people can reconnect through genuine human interaction, build confidence and discipline, and lead healthier lifestyles.

For Yumi, returning years later as an alumna and speaker felt like coming full circle. She shared her experiences with the alumni community at the dinner for NUS alumni in Ho Chi Minh City in January 2026.

The event allowed her and fellow alumni to reconnect professionally, exchange ideas and continue supporting one another throughout our careers.

🍄 Out of 45 teams from more than 10 countries, Team Mushroom, comprising second-year NUS student Jordan Chua from @nuscomputing , emerged top at the International AI Algorithmic Trading Hackathon.

“I did not try to predict the market better than others. Instead, I simply changed my lens, and built a portfolio designed to produce a wide range of outcomes; concentrated, deliberately volatile, and long-only,” Jordan said.

The hackathon is a highlight of IntelligenceX 2026: Global Quantum × AI Frontier, hosted by NUS and the Society of Algorithmic Intelligence from 24 to 26 September.

⚛️ IntelligenceX brings researchers, industry and policymakers together to explore new possibilities at the intersection of quantum computing and AI. #NUSImpact

They say you have to walk a lot at NUS, but with views like these, who’s complaining? 👀🌿

From wildlife sightings and edible gardens to green buildings and energy-efficient spaces, sustainability can be found all around us at NUS.

We took a walk last week along the NUS Nature Trail to discover how sustainability is woven into our campus. And with the haze reminding us how closely our environment affects our everyday lives, there’s no better time to think about why sustainability matters and the choices we can make towards a more sustainable and resilient future.

The trail is part of NUS Sustainability CONNECT, the University’s flagship sustainability festival happening throughout September. Check out an exciting line-up of hands-on activities, tours and talks, and discover more about sustainability at NUS.

For @NUSComputing student Zachary Kang, an exchange at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) became much more than a semester abroad. It was an opportunity to step beyond the familiar, immerse himself in a different culture, and discover new ways of learning, living and connecting with others.

From exploring cybersecurity research and experiencing a different academic environment, to representing DTU in Ultimate Frisbee and forging friendships across cultures, Zachary embraced every opportunity to learn — both inside and beyond the classroom.

Along the way, he rediscovered the joy of learning, gained fresh perspectives, and developed a deeper appreciation of the world around him.

Because sometimes, the greatest growth begins when we venture beyond what we know. One journey can change how we see the world — and ourselves. ✨

More than 300 @nuscomputing students across 20 cohorts of Computing for Voluntary Welfare Organisations (CVWO) – a student volunteer initiative - have applied their computing skills for social good, building software for social service and non-profit organisations. As they serve the community, these students also gained valuable hands-on experience beyond the classroom. #NUSImpact

CVWO marked this significant milestone, achieved over nearly two decades of dedicated efforts, at a celebration graced by Mrs @joteo.ylm , Minister for Digital Development and Information. As the initiative enters its next chapter, CVWO is exploring how AI and more configurable technology platforms can support a wider range of partner organisations.

While the rest of us are just trying to survive midterms, four NUS students built an AI app called Ahma to provide support for caregivers during high-stress moments.

What’s the biggest hurdle you’ve faced when trying to find help for an aging family member?

Excellence is not achieved overnight. It is built, day after day, through courage, curiosity, dedication and an unwavering commitment to making a difference.

It was an absolute delight to celebrate nine outstanding members of our NUS community at this evening’s University Awards 2026. 🏆

Their achievements are exceptional. But what inspires us most is how they continue to lift others—as mentors, educators, researchers and role models—and help shape the leaders of tomorrow.

Congratulations to all our award recipients! Your pursuit of excellence pushes our entire NUS community to dream bigger, go further and create greater impact.

Here’s to breaking new ground, inspiring the next generation, and shaping a better future—together. More at link in bio or at nus.edu/UA2026.
