Free event! Join us for A Voice of Her Own / Una Voz Propia, an evening of music, storytelling, and film celebrating the cultures, stories, and extraordinary talents that immigrants bring to our state and our communities—and standing with them when they need our support most.

The evening will feature live music and storytelling by Gemanereida Barragán-Cruz—Mariachi Singer & Storyteller, and culminate in the world premiere of a new 15-minute documentary about her extraordinary artistic journey and the power of her voice.

More than a film screening, this is an evening to gather in community, experience music and stories live, and celebrate Gemanereida and the many ways immigrant artists enrich the cultural life of our community.

This event is hosted by The Immigrant Story & NW Documentary.

Come celebrate with us—and be among the first to experience her story on screen.

James Krzmarzick, our principal cinematographer, has remained dedicated to this film from its early concept all the way to the finish line. He’s logged thousands of miles to film community plantings, interviews, and now continues attending screenings and film festivals to support the film. He’s worked for months at a time developing the film long before we ever got funding. A truly dedicated independent cinematographer, the film would not have been possible without his talent and stedfast commitment.

James Krzmarzick is a filmmaker based in Canby, Oregon. Drawing his inspiration from nature, his focus is on stories with environmental and social impact. In programs at Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and Recording Resilience, he has worked as an instructor and mentor to foster youth in the value and skills of storytelling through film.

Our Portland Premiere of SPACE: A MEDITATION ON THE MEANING OF ART sold out, so we are doing it again! Tonight, 7/31, in Portland at the storied NW Marine Art Works’ Building 5 where the last scenes of the film were recorded.

This one is a special kind of screening, in a 4,000 square foot, 3+ story tall warehouse that feels more like a chapel than anything else. We are erecting a cinema inside, DIY style. There’s no A/C. We are rolling out the folding chairs. There will be food and drink, live music by Samie Joan @samiejoan and The Big Vibe Band, and an exhibition of rarely displayed artworks by the late and beloved Tim Stapleton, whose heroic demise by ALS is documented in this wacky, heartfelt and death-demistifying film from the jazzed out brain of writer/director David Poulshock.

We are feeling very romantic about this gathering, so come on out Portland, and feel the romance of DIY art, film, music, collaboration, and celebration. <3

The best part of hanging up flyers around town is all the other amazing things people are up to in the city. There is so much to discover by slowing down for a moment and taking a look at your local pole covered in flyers!

We had a great time sharing 360 films during Day 1 of @pnwclimateweek !

The films we showed were made right here, in Oregon, and were united in their ability to transport viewers into stunning natural environments. Hard to reach places, like wetlands, for example. These films were about places that we want to see protected. Like the Minam River Wildlife Area, in the short film @360labs created. And how do you get someone to care about a place that’s far away from their day to day? Put them there, of course!

The utility of storytelling in VR was something we hoped to demonstrate with this event. We had about 20 attendees who tried VR, many for the first time. It was very special to be able to offer this and we want to thank everyone who came out and spent the evening with us!

Getting out and being with community during PNW Climate week is so green green 💚
