📚 Some moments remind you why you started writing ✍️

I am incredibly honored and grateful that the Nyack Library selected one of my poems, “You, Beautiful Girl,” to be included in Lit by the River, a collection celebrating local writers and their voices.

This poem is especially close to my heart. It speaks to the little girl who endured more than she should have, the woman still learning to forgive herself, and every girl who has ever carried shame that was never hers to carry.

Writing has always been more than putting words on paper for me. It is a way of giving a voice to experiences that too often remain hidden in silence.

Thank you to the Nyack Library for giving my words a place among the voices in this beautiful collection. It truly means so much to me. ♥️

YOU, BEAUTIFUL GIRL

You, beautiful girl,
I see you looking in the mirror,
eyes glassy and lost,
lips trembling like banana leaves in hurricane winds.
You’re trying to be strong,
but I know you’re tired.
You are worth it.
You deserve better than slammed doors,
than silence where love should have lived.
I know your shame is heavier than the water jugs you lifted in the campo.
But what happened to you was not your fault.
You are stronger than the roots of a mango tree,
bending during a storm but never breaking.
Please forgive yourself, beautiful girl.
The girl in you who didn’t fight back,
who swallowed screams,
who thought no one would believe her.
That girl was surviving.
Today I speak to you with the tenderness of Abuela’s voice,
telling stories beneath the old samán tree.
You are not the pain they gave you.
Let them carry the shame like sacks of plátanos too heavy to hold.
You, beautiful girl, one day you’ll run free.
You’ll feel the breeze on your skin the way we once did beneath the guava tree,
laughing barefoot, mango juice on our chins.
It won’t be easy.
There will be more tears,
more nights wondering if you’ll ever be free.
But you’ll rise.
You always do.
You will tell your story one day.
And a girl like you—
abused, afraid, ashamed—
will hear it,
and she’ll believe she can rise too.
Because somehow, beautiful girl,
you will turn survival into light.

From the Paley Center in Manhattan on Monday, to Princeton on Wednesday, to Carson’s beloved Nyack on Thursday, this has been an outstanding week for All the Love You Can Use: The Letters of Carson McCullers, edited by Carlos Dews. (Dubious? See the link in bio of the Princeton Public Library event on YouTube!)

But the tour is certainly not over yet! Join us tomorrow (Monday 10/12 at 6) at the main branch of the Columbus Public Library for a fabulous, free event with letter readings from many of Columbus’ brightest artists and friends of McCullers, and commentary from Dr. Dews. Books will be sold and signed after the event. Don’t miss it!

🎥 #FlashbackFriday: A Q&A with Jason Reynolds!

We’re throwing it back to last month’s visit with acclaimed author Jason Reynolds. Today, we’re sharing Part 1 as our #FriYAY of his Q&A with our students, featuring advice straight from Jason on what it takes to make it as a writer, how to get started and who to turn to along the way.

His message? Every aspiring writer has to start somewhere and sometimes, the right words of wisdom can open the door to what’s possible. ✍️💡

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice...

Back to Headless Horseman territory to work some concerts, set-up some fancy corporate shindigs, and literature. Come by Nyack Library on Saturday to hear some stellar, homegrown authorship!

Until next time, Salem -- I'll be back real soon. And I look forward to seeing you on The Other Side 🫡

Earlier this year I was lucky enough to hop into the Nyack Public Library's Toddler Time to read my new board book. The Youth Librarian, Morgan, hosts a lively, engaging storytime and it was so much fun! My little Capybara (star of my board book) loved exploring the stacks in the beautiful library overlooking the Hudson. And now I'm so happy to share that I'll be participating in their Children's Local Author Event tomorrow with many other talented local authors! Please stop by if you can! Wednesday, 10/7, 4-6pm. Hope to see you there!
