Within the next few days we are going to introduce the choreographers that will present their work in WIKA. First up we have Zab Maboungou.

“Zab Maboungou knows how to inhabit a stage—not just physically, but also mentally, and even spiritually.”
Lili Marin, Kaos magazine, Montreal, 2001

Born in Paris and raised in Congo-Brazzaville, Zab Maboungou discovered the power of dance at a very young age. She pursued studies in philosophy in France, and later taught both philosophy and dance in Montreal, where she eventually settled. There, she founded Zab Maboungou/Compagnie Danse Nyata-Nyata (1987), as well as a professional dance training program—PEFAPDA (*Programme d’Entraînement et de Formation Professionnelle en Danse*, 2003)—and a method of rhythmic alignment known as LO.KE.TO.

Appointed as an artistic advisor for MASA (*Marché des arts vivants de la scène*—Market for the Performing Arts) in 1994 by the Ivorian Minister of Culture, Zab Maboungou has been invited to stages, festivals, and symposiums across four continents. Her choreographies, noted for their power, bridge the mental and physical realms; they radiate a spiritual strength and showcase a mastery of rhythm that is matched only by the deep commitment of the bodies, the dance, and the music itself. In January 2024, her company acquired a new space for its artistic practice: the *Centre Création Danse Nyata Nyata*. In the autumn of 2025, Zab Maboungou collaborated with Espace Perreault on the creation of the *Boîte chorégraphique Mozongi: Traces et mémoires* (“Mozongi Choreographic Box: Traces and Memories”), a project coordinated by Katya Montaignac.

“Bodies have a life of their own—a life that is immeasurable. To connect them is to contribute to the magic of the world.”

— Zab Maboungou

WIKA will be performed at the Gas Station Arts Centre from Nov 6-7, 2026. Hope to see you there!

We are back! We are excited to announce our show WIKA, a performance series dedicated to showcasing exceptional dance companies from across the Canadian African diaspora. This edition of WIKA brings one outstanding guest company to Winnipeg, paired with a fresh offering from NAfro Dance Productions.

We’re ecstatic to welcome Nyata Nyata, the legendary Montreal-based company with choreographer Zab Maboungou. With them, we have NAfro Dance Productions company member and contemporary dance artist Paula Blair, and Winnipeg’s hip hop extraordinaire GeNie Baffoe. Three dances you wouldn’t want to miss.

WIKA will be shown at the Gas Station Arts Centre on November 6 and 7, 2026.

Hope to see you there!

“Laisse couler tes larmes “
Tu apaisera ton âme
Laisse couler tes larmes
Tu retrouvera ton charme

Just saying
