Would you lie down at the edge of a 1,000-foot cliff for a photo? Just got back from our Southwest tour: Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon and Bryce Canyon!
Here we are at Horseshoe Bend waiting for the light at sunset. We got lucky with the sky. Lots of big fluffy clouds and a gorgeous sunset.
People always ask why I use filters. An ND filter cuts down the light so I can use a slower shutter speed. A graduated ND is dark on top and clear on the bottom, so it darkens the sky without making the canyon too dark. That’s how I got detail in the sky and the canyon in that last shot.

Did you know you can tour the world famous Antelope Canyon all to yourself… Just go at night 😉✨

With our Private Navajo Guide @nybimages we got the opportunity to capture night photos in several Navajo Canyons- no crowds or timelines, just slow moving to the hum of crickets and stillness of deep Navajo sandstone.

Our Diné (Navajo) guide Nate expertly illuminated the canyon walls for us with low level lighting to photograph the textures of the canyon and the Milky Way Galaxy above. Or as the Diné refer to the Milky Way Galaxy as “Yikáísdáhá” - meaning something like The Light that Extends into the Night Sky, referring to the cyclical nature of harmony in the universe and a transcendent cultural pathway that guides humans.

One of my favorite things about touring on the Navajo Nation in Northern Arizona is despite their more recent austere and complicated history out West, the Navajo have a great sense of humor, are very warm, and use Tourism as a way to share their stories and culture with the world.

The incredible dark and starry skies of Northern Arizona, to me, are another example of their traditional and holistic way of life being preserved into the future.

I don’t always get these photos alone. Most of them come from my guide friends who have trusted me over the years and take me to these hidden gems. Sadly, social media continues to expose these beautiful sacred places and uneducated people flock in droves for social media photos leaving irreparable damage in their wake.

I’ve seen graffiti and carvings where thousands of years of beautiful sandstone once stabilized the walls. I find tossed trash exposed when the wind reveals the landscape’s layers. I hear screams to hear echoes within caves where noise vibration has damaged delicate formations, and I see breakage to vulnerable younger topography caused by foot traffic in restricted areas beyond designated trails.

As much as I love each adventure itself, I am equally as excited to share these adventures on social media too, but my goal is to inspire friends to get out and explore our planet’s wonders with respect. If I can share from a learning perspective, it’s a step in the right direction to mitigate the damage. I’ll continue to do my diligence by educating whenever I can. I will always advocate for local guides because they have the safety training, history, passion and visiting etiquette we should all embrace. I continue to learn from them.

Stay on the path. Always ask to touch, enter areas, and share lesser known locations when you’re lucky enough to be invited. If you bring it in, pack it out. Screaming and yelling makes you look douchey and keep the “tagging” (graffiti) in art class.

It takes thousands of years (millions in some cases) to create these picture-perfect places. It takes minutes to destroy them.

פעם, לפני הרבה שנים, ראיתי תמונה בגוגל, אולי אפילו שומר מסך של windows, ובדקתי איפה המקום המדהים הזה. מצאתי כתובת של מערה/קניון מאבן אדומה, עם זוויות אור וצל מטורפות ושמרתי בwish list. וויש ליסט שבטח לא תתגשם בחיים. והנה, החיים התהפכו עליי, הפציעה, השיקום, העזיבה ממובילאיי, התחלתי חיים חדשים פתאום , והנה, V על הwish list. המקום הזה הוא אנטילופ קניון באריזונה. תתחילו לשים כסף בצד מעכשיו.

She said what she said!!!🤷‍♀️😳😘

My inner voice was CRINGE tonight.

She really is brutal at times. And she didn’t spare any punches. 🤛

She usually shows up when I am vulnerable really seems to like making herself known when I am already g(r)asping for air.

This week, she showed up with an old story…

‘Hey girl-you are doing it WRONG. Who the f8ck are you calling yourself a somatic results coach when you are reeeeeaaaaallly in so much pain?”

Hmm.

Ok, part. I see you here.

OUCH!

All the while, she lit up my body with her familiar communication.

Tight chest.
Dull ache in my low back.
A few more notably loud and uncomfortable messages.

OK! FINE! You have my attention.

Time to slow down. Time to tend.

Last night, I asked my girlfriend if she had space to hold me so I could spill over. She did. 🤍

I leaned into the thoughts, the resistance, the feelings. There it is! you are completely undone. Wept. Laughed. Yelled.

Messy. So messy.

Feeling without story is HARD.

Feeling without meaning is HARDER.

But it’s also freedom.

I then had this urge to rub castor oil on my belly and IMMEDIATELY I started shaking uncontrollably.

Good news. My body felt safe to process, too.

You see, while I find comfort in the moment when I remember that this week is here FOR me because of my immersion next week and there is also so much relief that comes through JUST by leaning in and welcoming the parts that make us want to turn away.

Antelope Canyon has been on my bucket list for a long time. The four hour trip through the fringe of the painted desert is an unexpected surprise as you make your way north out of Phoenix. We had the fortune of being assigned to Nate (@nybimages) as our Navajo guide. This is a trip well worth the adventure, especially during the off season and regardless of the weather!
